Cape Town - Government's wasteful spending now stands at R318m, due largely to the SABC's complete lack of internal control and financial chaos, as well as the cost of more luxury vehicles for ministers and their deputies, the DA said on Friday.

The education department continued to be one of the biggest spenders, splashing out up to R267 000 on a budget vote party, DA Chief Whip Ian Davidson said.

This follows the R1.2m spent by both the minister of basic education and the minister of higher education on new luxury vehicles.

"This lavish spending by the ANC-led government shows no sign of abating, as President Jacob Zuma publicly calls for financial austerity but repeatedly fails to act on those that don't listen to him," Davidson said.

"All bark and no bite results in public officials who fear no consequences."

Spent on luxuries

The latest increase was a result of money spent purely on luxuries and wasted as if financial imprudence had no consequences.

Among other things, a reply to a DA parliamentary question revealed that the water and environmental affairs department had bought a R900 000 BMW for Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi.

Through another parliamentary question, the DA uncovered the fact that the police department had splurged out R235 000 on luxury hotel accommodation for Minister Nathi Mthethwa.

Economic Development MEC Mike Mabuyakhulu had used his own car for government business, and claimed a total of R383 618.07 for four months travel expenses.

A BMW 7 Series was bought for Minister in the Presidency Trevor Manuel at a cost of R1.2m and included R100 000 in "unnecessary accessories".

Another reply to a parliamentary question revealed that Deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula had spent R1.6m on two new ministerial vehicles, including R83 879 on extras.

Davidson said, as part of its oversight role as the official opposition, the DA introduced the Wasteful Expenditure Monitor as a means of measuring the extent of the ANC government's fruitless and wasteful expenditure of public funds, and to "demonstrate how often the needs of the ANC elite are put before the needs of ordinary South Africans".

Cape Town - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga spent more than R250 000 on a party to celebrate her budget speech in Parliament.

In answer to a parliamentary question from George Boinamo, the DA spokesperson for education, Motshekga said the department of education had spent a total of R267 044 on the event.

This included about R50 000 for refreshments and R20 500 for entertainment.

Motshekga pointed out that the party - which was attended by 250 guests - was held for both the basic education and higher education and training departments.

The party and the expensive accommodation of the Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa in the Table Bay Hotel in the V&A Waterfront (which amounted to R237 000), cost the taxpayer more than half a million rand.

Motshekga and Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande have already come under fire for buying luxury official cars, despite the recession.

Motshekga's two cars, (a Range Rover Sport TDV8 and a BMW 730D), cost the taxpayer more than R1.7m while Nzimande's BMW 750i cost more than R1.1m.

Publicise this blatant theft to the people who voted the ANC into overwhelming corrupt power.

So, it's going to be about R500 000 000 a year for remainder of their 5 year term.
That's 2.5 billion rand on BS.

stories like this is a inspiration to the masses, since hopefully they can get into the same positions if they are corrupt enough

hehe. Just saying. It is a pitty. They could power a informal settlement with solar or a large part of it with that kinda dosh...oh well....guess they need the money to buy the moet champaign for their bashes

Its a shame really that the ANC plays on its somewhat naive peoples hardships.
 
The ANC cant help it if their voters are so CHEAP! :-)

What do you think the chances are of the voters in the other provinces seeing what the DA manages in the WC and switches party? Or you think they will keep on voting ANC cause that is what they know?

Do the majority of the people even know how the government they elected are wasting money? the worst is that this is not even money that is being stolen due to theft! This is money that is leaving the government coffers as legal transactions....even though it is wastefull!!!!!
 
never ... but what i do see is before the next elections, the anc supporters getting carted into CT and the anc winning the province with numbers ...
