Hi,

I thought this might be interesting for all MTN 3G users.

I recently moved from Vodacom to MTN. What a pleasure. Connection speed, signal strength, data traffic etc are so much better! Unlike Vodacom, you also don’t get kicked out of the 3G network if you are inactive for a couple of minutes during peak times.

However, ca. 8 days after my new subscription was activated I noticed that I had used already over 400 MB of my 1 GB monthly limit. This was very strange as I didn’t download a lot. I started to investigate and noticed that the dashboard software MTN F@stlink generates traffic approx. every 5 seconds and down- and uploads data. I closed all applications on my notebook like Outlook, browser and stopped all RSS feeds. Still MTN F@astlink continued to be busy. Then I checked which processes are active with Windows’ task manager and noticed a programme UpdateUI.exe that automatically loads whenever you start MTN F@astlink. I think this programme checks for updates every 5 seconds and generates about 6 MB of data for every hour of online time. Now, I “kill” this programme with task manager before I go online. MTN F@astlink works without any problems.

I’m going to contact MTN to get more information. I would be interested to know if other members with MTN 3G have similar experiences.

Take care!

My Dash do not start up with the UpdateUI.exe thing, however my firewall actually blocks these things. Also note i believe Mcafee also uses a file with a similar name, but again i saw the file in my MTN program files folder.....

What does your firewall say [rather is it able?]. As in, can you see whether it's UpdateUI.exe generating the traffic to a specific outside remote adress? My MTN [email protected] does generate alot of traffic itself, but it looks to be localhost ports [it is acting as a server/proxy afterall] .

See this thread : http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=1889014
Maybe it's a Vista+Specific version thing?

The thread suggests to rename the file so it doesn't run. I can't find a setting to stop updates either [on the dash]....

EDIT: I just checked out my dash: If you click on "Main Menu" [bottom right corner] and click on "Online Update" . It will open the UpdateUI.exe with an actual screen...UNtick the box on the bottom left "Select to check for software updates on connnection" ...that might be the problem. Mine is off, so it never runs.
