Water from Air

I bought one of these if anyone wants feedback. So far I'm very happy with it.

A friend of mine owns one - in fact he has gone off the coct water supply for good. He bought 6 x 1000l jojo tanks had the whole system installed & plumbed in and now carries on with life as before the drought.

I will be getting a smaller 28l machine soon with 2 x 1000l jojo's

Mine is a 20L/day machine and uses 495W while producing water. It stops when it's full, but assuming it runs 24h/day it will use 356 kWh/month. I'm on flat rate of R1.69/kWh, so maximum cost is R601/month (assuming 30 days per month).

Water goes through four different filters and UV. Tastes fine.

How much did the machine set you back though?

That's a rather neat +- R1 a litre which is considerably less than bottled water if you buy it in 5 litre bottles. Not bad.

Compared to municipal water, sure. Not if you look at other alternatives for drinkable water.

Had a 5% discount voucher and free delivery.

R15,199.

It goes nicely with my solar electric gear. Also got a camping gas geyser (I need a warm shower), and camping washing machine (not washing my stuff in the bath) and a pump (pool water for flushing the loo).

Even if day zero doesn't happen it makes me less dependent on the state which is always a good thing.

I'm renting at the moment or else I would have gone the route of rain harvesting to tanks, on demand pumping into the house plumbing through various filters and UV. Then nothing really changes and you can use your existing appliances.

Ja, didn't factor for that. It'd take a pretty long time to offset the initial outlay. Still, if you consider availability etc., it might not be that terrible. I've seen the lines for bottled water in CT. Come day zero, who knows what it'll be like.

Edit: if my sums are right, over a 2 year period it doubles the cost of production at full capacity, which is still cheaper than bottled water.

You also need to replace the filters each year at R650.
 
Do these units cool the room that they're in? That could be a secondary benefit, especially today... Jesus...
