is anyone in cape town doing this:
if you live close to the beach you would have noticed everything drenched by water during the regular fog we have.

interestingly, i was at a friend's place the other evening & noticed fir trees seem to react differently to fog - they throw the water right off again.
notice the water all over the road under the trees but not elsewhere:

You need a very large surface area to make this work. Typically 10m² of net will produce anything from 50-250 litres per day depending on several factors (I've no idea what typical fog in CT may produce). In ideal conditions the water gained can go higher of course. The tricky part is how do you make this survive the typical winds in CT?
 
Saw an American university doing something similar to this but with cotton sheets. They collected 40 litres of water from one square metre catchment area that was on the Californian coast. I found it very interesting. Also saw another African video where they built a massive tent where you walk in a spiral towards the centre where it collects all the dew from the plastic also harvesting quite a reasonable amount.
 
Do you get regular enough fog for that to matter?
huge amount if you are close to the beach - very regularly from about 4am to 6 or 7am - sometimes until much later.

blocks of flats along the beachfront have saturated roofs and driveways from fog every couple of days
 
500 Million litres per day, even at optimum collection rate of 40l/m2 you would need tens of square kilometres to catch enough water for one suburb. You'd have better luck building a condenser. So active extraction rather than passive.

did you really think i meant this as a solution for the entire city ?

something like this could be used for homes NEAR THE SEA, and the endless row of blocks of flats (many of whom have flat roofs and expansive blank vertical walls) where such a system could be implemented for the use of that particular property
