I'm going to Europe in a few days and most people say I need to wear waterproof shoes cause of the snow. My daily shoe is material (Converse) and if they get wet, they say I'd lose a toe :/ I'm not keen on spending cash so I'd like to get something I can wear there (waterproof) but wouldn't look out of place with some denims. And cheap.

Any idea of what to look at ?
Hiking shoes look dumb, if you don't hike?

You might have to spends some cash, but the Salomon Speedcross 4 Gtx is waterproof and will look good with jeans. Know there are some Merrell's that are also waterproof.

You could also use waterproof spray on your existing shoes and it may or may not do the job.

Plenty of Merrell's and others that don't look like hiking shoes that would do the job.

Uhm...that with Jean's. May as well rock that white NB chunky talkie then.

Heavy snow or light snow?

I got away with wearing normal shoes in light snow.

Not sure about it having to be waterproof either.

I only have some basic looking Merrell's which are not the waterproof variant, but I'd probably use them because of the Vibram soles.

Leather boots could also work... you do get some slim looking Cat boots - can't find an image for it though. Even if they soak up some water, they stay dry for some time in rain.

Yeah any non-perforated leather shoe would do the job.

Treat with some Dubin or Renapur and off you go.

So some of you mentioned leather ... what about these Converse ?

I'm going to Latvia for a few days and the weather appears to change frequently.

Seems heavier snow on the Tuesday and lighter towards the end of the week. I'll be walking around Friday most the day and if my feet are wet in -10 weather ... I don't think I'll be happy :) Maybe with these temperatures, I should rule out the Converse altogether ?

My goretex Merrell Moabs were fine, the big boot types are quite popular as well as some of the waterproof trail shoes like Salomon.

Hey,

I am currently staying in Latvia. This year the winter hasn't been to harsh yet (ranging from -3 -> -14 during the weeks with some moderate snow.) My recommendation would be to make sure you pack a few good pairs of socks (Cape Union Mart used to sell nice winter socks) otherwise you might find your shoes aren't wet, but your feet still freezing). You might find that you'll get boots here (Latvia) for cheaper as its almost the only thing in the shoe stores at the moment and most is Goretex coated. On my first visit I only took my Bronx with good socks which was okay for the Riga city areas (our sidewalks are cleaned and salted daily) but not good for the country side. If you can get any pair that is coated and have a nice high sole it will be great. Hope it helps.

Thanks - saw this too late :(

I actually went to Cape Union today I got me these shoes (https://www.capeunionmart.co.za/k-way-edge-wp-shoe-mens-black-rust) - they say both windproof waterproof. and vibram sole I bought a few pairs of Ski socks, a K Way fleece beanie and a K Way jacket (https://www.capeunionmart.co.za/k-way-men-s-drake-down-jacket-indigo) - plus a thermal vest. I'm not sure of rating - but these things feel pretty warm to me. R3,300 for a few days :/

Yea it seems mild now - but next week seems -8 is the max, with dropping to -15. Yesterday it was showing snow on those days too - but I see they've changed that.

You're in Riga?
Or the country side ?

And now I feel I need to go to Clarens mid winter ...

I am currently in Riga yeah :)

One other thing, if you don't have it already, is get yourself a beanie.
Yeah I am pretty sure you'll encounter some snow. We had snow multiple times this week. Only today and yesterday was a bit less snowy and as we gear up for February the temperatures will go down.
