Am I the only person that see's this an absoluley wasteful way to help with the water crisis?

Article:

East Coasters are being urged to open their hearts and wallets as day two of East Coast Radio's #WaterShare drive continues this morning.

Nearly 3000 litres of water were donated yesterday.

You can play your part by donating sealed bottles of water at ECR House in Umhlanga. Water can also be dropped off at the offices of Gift of the Givers Foundation in Overport and Pietermaritzburg.

Click here to see how Day 1 of #WaterShare unfolded.

We've spoken to a few good Samaritans who have donated water bottles.

"I think we are all affected by the drought here in Durban and across the country but today is my brother's birthday so I said let us do something for the community and Durban as a tribute to that," said one water donor.

"I just heard it on East Coast Radio and I thought I would bring my contribution as well," a Durban dad said.

"I was driving around this morning to work and I heard this on the radio and I realised we've got so much water. So I must get involved," said the resident.

Its something that the individual can do though, so no its not stupid at all...

Yes, its just a small dent, but its something.

I takes on average 1.4l of water to make 1l of bottle water. I see this as extremely wasteful

I agree, they should rather just donate money so they can get a water tanker sent to the places that need it.

Problem is that many of these areas do not have drinkable water nearby, much of the money will go to fuel, this is also a convenient way to store it without making people stand in ques to fill buckets, perhaps its also easier to limit the amount of water each person gets otherwize if a few people bring huge buckets it unfair to those who don't and the tanker empty's faster and many municipality do not have enough tankers if the private donors but it I assume it would be over 200k.

Shipping water in a large tanker is more efficient than using a million small bottles on a truck.

Unless you have to buy the tanker, also would have to know the distance the water has traveled, like operation Hydrate water was from other cities also 3 thousand liters will not fill a tanker

Have you seen how water is dished out from those tankers?

I would assume at LEAST 50% of it is wasted by just being spilled onto the ground.

As an aside, I'm aware that from a pure water point of view this idea is not the most efficient....

BUT, for the average man on the street it provides a way that they can help in probably the most efficient small scale way possible. They don't donate money and never see the end result, they aren't paying admin etc etc etc out of their donation to see that it gets where it needs to go.... and the end user gets a 5l (or whatever) size container filled with water that they can drink straight away.

They they should pool together and organise everyone with a 4x4 to tow a small 1500 litre trailer.
Something like this:

Have you ever tried to arrange a whole bunch of disparate people to do something like that?

Going this way means they can have a set deadline already to deliver whatever they've been given.

It is being organised by Gift of the Givers. And they must already have transportation organised if there is a deadline.

So all you do is hire one of these trailers, then tell people to come and donate water.

What happens when the water gets to it's destination?
It's going to be distributed to individuals so will end up in smaller bottles anyway.
And how much water will be lost due to spillage when filling up peoples containers?
I think the way they are doing it is much better.
Makes it easier and more convenient for people to both donate and receive the water.
