Ways To Reduce ADSL Costs

We all have certain ways to reduce the costs of internet access.

Afrihost used their marketing money to subsidise the massive drop in price to R29 per gig on a finite amount of accounts. They have set the new standard rate.

If other ISPs follow suit with similar ideas to reduce costs, The standard rate will drop further, for those that purchase a finite amount of accounts.

This way, the low costs can be maintained.

The entire country could be served, by just all ISPA members using some brain power, to reduce costs on a specific package.

If all the ISPs made sure they were not competing on the same product, they would be able to make a wide range of products available to the public, which would suit every niche.

Individuals also further help others with savings, by mentioning the specific ways that they use the various products, from different suppliers, at specific times.

Use this thread to post your tips for the public. Even quote great tips you've read elsewhere.

ISPs may wish to use this thread also, to find ways that they can promote and drop prices, for specific products, in these exciting times we have just entered.

K, here's how I'm doing it right now with afrihost and cybersmart

Get 384k line and 4gig cap from CS, use this in nightrider time, and then buy their cap extender for 3GB local (R35 for gaming on twilight War3).

Turn old comp into a server, set system to auto switch between international and local everyday at 1AM and 8AM and to also auto launch emule for DL during night rider and shut it down at 8 in the morning.

Same old comp with proxy server setup and connected to afrihost during non night rider times so browsing can be done easily even If my comp is connected to cybersmart local only and playing warcraft.

Oh, you have to set ur modem to bridge to do what I'm doing.

Only prob with this setup is if you plan to take war3 all the way past 1AM you need to stop some scheduled tasks;)

Great idea from AcidRaZor:
FYI, if you take a closer plan you don't have the once off installation cost. However, the closer plan does come with bandwidth and stuff added onto it, but you do have the option to cancel the closer plan immediately (just make sure they don't sign you into a 24 month contract)

You guys forget the ADSL router ;) That is another cost you need to consider. However, you get cheap ones out there and it works on all ADSL networks, not just one (unlike wireless companies do)

If you want a cheap option with decent speed you might want to consider Telkom Wimax. With Telkom Wimax it's as if you have a ADSL line (you get a DSLAM port and everything) and it's 512kbps for R240 a month. No line rental. So about R90 more expensive than a 384kbps line (line rental is R131 AFAIK)

Then you can use any ADSL account (including afrihost) as your bandwidth provider.

In total, the wimax solution is:

1) R544 once off installation cost
2) R240 month to month (no contract) for 512kbps
3) Afrihost ;)
