In many circles a hacker is hailed as a hero but it is difficult to regard whomever is responsible as anything other than a common criminal. Thousands of hackers and malware developers around the world are laying waste to their talents everyday in order to annoy and upset as many people as they possibly can. How can this possibly be viewed as furthering technology for the greater good of mankind?

oh ffs
I remember "web 1.0" when "script kiddies" hung out in chatrooms "hacking" away with their "nukers" and writing "hacker manifestos" in their mothers basements about what a noble art "hacking" is for only intending to gather information. While "cracking" is the evil brother.
The whole annoying "hacker" subculture as been gone for years now.

I think RPM used the right word: Wayward programmer.

While it's possible to be a delinquent programmer (virus writers etc), thank goodness for those with the talents to reverse engineer in an age of patent mania, DRM, incompatible "standards" etc. The hackers are the safety valve preventing many corporations from milking ideas beyond what is reasonable, fair and in the best interests of society.
