WBS WiMax here

Sounds really interesting especially since it has base station here in Cape Town...though really depends on both the price and the quality of signal.

How do I get hold of this company? I cannot find anything on the web. I want to know if they can give me connectivity in the rural area I live.

WBS has launched its WiMax broadband offering

WBS will start providing WiMax services to a limited number of trial users in order to iron out any network and process related issues, with a view to launching commercially in August 2008.

Since when does trialing and launching mean the same thing?

WBS has filed its pricing with ICASA and the company said that it will release the pricing details as soon as it is approved by the regulator.

If you file your prices, you can also announce it to the rest of us. The only reason they are not announcing it, is because it will be expensive...

Ai more announcing of announcements...
Anyway I'm also interested in the pricing and coverage for this. Higher speeds would be better in my opinion, as 1024 kb/s hardly constitutes "fast broadband" in any shape, or form. The cap size seem to be a step in the right direction, but simply still far below the rest of the world.

Hopefully this will bring some competition to the market.

August 2008? That means January 2009.

Look how adventurous they are being, 512 and 1024 speeds (another step backward) with 5GB and 10GB caps (pretty much the same as their current over-priced and ineffective offerings).

To top it all, you will still have to deal with the same inept helpdesk who have no clue about the iBurst technology and will now be expected to add this to their list of things they do not know, the same accounts department who cannot even manage the accounts for one type of service and now they have to manage this, iBurst and ADSL!

This is a disaster waiting to happen.

Won't recommend it as they need to sort their accounts department out.

And they'll also need to sort their network out first - I'm sure the wimax users will also experience the same problems and issues as the current iburst users do.

Well, that's iBurst down the tubes. They can't seriously be trying to sell 64k "leased lines" in a market where we now have 1Gbps metro ethernet services and plenty of broadband alternatives. That's quite apart from the fact that their idea of customer service is basically customer abuse. So much for iBurst WiMAX offering real broadband. I wonder if they'll try to throw in an analogue telephone. They're just like Telkom. I suppose the rates will be the same as Diginet. :D

Now that competition has arrived, why must ICASA still approve tariffs?
Why can't competitors set their own prices?

Well, as we all know, ICASA regulations have always served to benefit Telkom. The existance of price tarrif regulations is no different. Limiting prices make it harder for competitors to compete. Telkom can afford to charge more and as a result make a greater profit, and a very profitable Telkom means a wealthier government.

The real question should be, why the hell do we even need ICASA?
