I have a failing 2 year old 500Gb WD hdd (delayed write failures). Now, according to the Matrix invoice the drive is only under warranty for 12 months but according to WD's website the drive is under warranty until 2011 (serial no). Can I get it replaced?

Contact Western Digital directly. I had the same problem (also western digital funny enough) but the place I bought it from actually sorted everything out for me (I was lucky). Not sure if Matrix will do the same. If they (Matrix) give you a new one they have to claim from Western Digital and some places don't like doing extra work. But yes you should get it replaced free of charge. Thats a long warrenty though lol

It's not right. Stores will take your money and not carry the manufacturer's warranty. Just had the same thing, called a local store who are advertising the Samdung 1TB drive:

"What's your warranty on that drive?"
"1 year carry-in"
"...okay, thanks...."

No thanks.

Manufactures warranty should be passed on to the client - write to WD, cc Matrix.
Don't shop at Matrix again, ever!

+1

I Would much rather go to another store and have peace of mind.

If it were a Seagate drive, who would you turn to? Seagate does not have any SA offices AFAIK.

Dodgy companies do not offer more than one year because it's a hassle for them.

Make sure when you buy something from a place it has the correct warranty.

Contact Drive Control Corporation or Pinnacle as they are the local distributor. From the Serial# they will be able to tell you if they supplied it. Do the warranty through them.

Thanks for all the help guys. Can I go to DCC and have it swapped on the spot?

You should be able to if it's under warranty. I did it a few years back with a WD drive that failed on a client - was swapped immediately after they tested it. Maybe call them first and check if it's still the same procedure.

You can also try Computer Storage Services, www.cssi.co.za They are (one of the bigger) local importers of WD, and they really know what their doing!
Good luck!

Many computer resellers only give standard warranty on all hardware regardless if some components have warranties more than a year. Find out who the suppliers are for WD ( I think its Drive Control Corp.) and get it swapped out! They may charge you a small swap out fee!
