I know most youngster's where never taught netiquette... so if you where not, try googling it. And if that is to much effort... insulting someone trying to helping the parent poster is not in-line with the spirit of community.

Additionally since I have ACTUALLY worked for a fax-2-email company and I should have a bit of experience supporting people having problems sending faxes. And would maybe just happen to know that removing unknowns from a equation... plus knowing that many new all-in-one devices force v.34 rather than allowing fall back to v.17 or v.29 is standard debugging.

Of-course, why would my *actual* experience with (PRI, BRI, SS7 links, T.38, etc) count against some random keyboard cowboy.

Maybe you should realise that there are some of us that were around BEFORE FAX machines and actually specified and designed and installed the first fax compliant systems and links, and installed the very first PRI, and BRI links and wrote parts of the manual on SS7 signalling .....

Removing components from a system which could be having an unknown effect on the not working of the system is troubleshooting 101 when any of the quick fixes have failed.
In fact, quick fix fixes sometimes introduce additional unnecessary complications to troubleshooting methodology.

However, at this point in time so much effort has been spent on troubleshooting the fax machine I would simply replace it as the man hours spent on fixing a device of questionable value is way over it's worth.

Especially because you get Email to fax (and vice versa) services out there that don't cost you an arm and a leg, doesn't rely on 80's technology and is far more readable because you don't have to line up the paper just-so in order to get the text straight.

Now hush you 2 and stop the dick swinging contest.

The OP was pretty thorough in his initial fault finding, hence why the suggestions were not all that helpful. In most cases. IF the fax machine is not faulty, it is all about working systematically through the configurations. Unless the machine is really old, there are only 2 issues that need specific attention as previously mentioned, pulse/tone dialling and direct line access or connected to an extension on some or other phone system.

It's alive!

I checked the fax module, and saw that one of the pins were askew and dusty... Bent it back in place, cleaned it, and it seems to be working again!

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

Thank goodness. I was just about to post instructions on how to set the S registers using AT commands. :p

Great outcome! One up for those that believe in using their existing tools and devices optimally!

Ahh the days of sending through strings of AT commands, I miss those days :(

:D

I still have my little "fax book" (equivalent to a black book), with every single "fax machine" and other device brought into the country (legal and otherwise), AT command strings to get it up and running .......

Why?

OP has already shown that normal fixed voice services work .... Nothing to do with whether it is also a ADSL line ....

Umm, do you even have the slightest idea of how DSL works? Voice and DSL are travelling on the line. Google how dsl works for a better explanation.

A real pity you do not bother to read the whole thread before coming up with remarks like this.

If you had, you should have seen the fault was traced to a connection problem ---- and NOT to anything to do with settings or the line or any other components.

And BTW, I was part of a team that installed the very first ADSL service in SA!
