In this article ... the thing that stands out to me is the following:

"I have spoken to the mayor and premier Rasool, ministers and deputy ministers, saying, you know it is my view that I need to be president of SA for 10 years after 2009 (when his term ends)," he told about 300 community leaders.

What I see here is that he still believes he should be the president for another term ... but over here:

"But I failed. All of them, without exception, said the constitution said you can't," Mbeki said.

its everyone else who dismissed that idea ... so just because he said its not going to happen ... doesn't mean he changed his mind. If they suddenly said yes ... he would sign any documents quicker than a pig would jump in ****!!!

Anyhow - when Mbeki declares his intention to attempt to change the constitution (and by your own acknowledgement he lacks the support to achieve the 2/3rds majority needed) instead of merely running for president of the ANC then something has changed. There is also no guarantee that he will be re-elected as the ANC President.

Sorry ... I meant student of politics, not economics ... in terms of a full understanding.

I don't see how anything has changed ... he should not even consider it ... he knows our constitution. At the moment if the cabinet accepted, he would without a doubt run for a 3rd term because he is power hungry ... th way it should work though is that if they offered it to him, he should say no and tell them its against constitution ...

But like I say ... I may be wrong in my views ... thats just the way I perceive it.

The exact same classifications the apartheid system. any government enforced classification is racist. Try to dispute that!

Carefully evaluate your standpoint on any form of racial classification before you deliver an opinion.

I don't think I'll get away with it. I remember when the ANC first came to power and the racist cries about having to fill out "black" when applying for ID's. Why do we have to fill out "white" then?

That's exactly why you should always just fill in "african".

Anyone who refutes your africanism should be challenged to prove that you're in fact NOT african.

That would indeed be interesting. I have yet to see how exactly the government intends to determine race for their classifications.

Mbeki is barred by the constitution from standing again as president after his term expires in 2009 but he can contest the ANC leadership -- something he has said he is willing to do.

All the ANC big guns have been outspoken recently about strengthening the 'alliance'.
Sexwale and Terror addressing ANCYL went as far as to say that any rift would be a threat to the democracy of this country even.

I'm amazed at how the masses tolerate the opulence and prosperity of these selectfew individuals that have made millions and millions of rands on the backs of the people while they still stare bluntly everyday at poverty.

The rift in the alliance has got them rattled.
The day that there is a split it would probably be the best thing that could ever happen on the road to a functioning democracy, not a one party state like now.

If we learn from Zim though, it seems that African leaders and their supporters don't accept defeat to well.

In fact, if the ANC tore in two (or three or four), and the alliance completely disbands, that would be the best thing that could happen for our democracy. Only then, will no single group have so much power and so much control. The power will be better distributed, and our voices would count for more.

Competition for the sake of the people is not a concept at all understood or even considered by the ANC. The existence of this forum proves it.
