As Johannesburg Airport prepares to be renamed after one of the heroes of the fight against apartheid, some Afrikaners fear their place in history is being all too rapidly erased.
'We are being erased' October 26 2006

My take: this is not a democracy, it is a VICTORY at the expense of all south africans.

The ANC is creating more racial devide, to get all white Africans to leave South Africa - simple, isn't it?

When the airport was renamed to Johannesburg Int Airport, it was neutral & everybody could get on with their lives.

Now the ANC forces the new name down my throat and I absolutely hate it. I don't think Oliver Tambo was a hero, in my mind he is still a terrorist and the reason why I had to do national service.

Also, the ANC allowed this country to become lawless, but I'm afraid they've lost control, because the youngsters had a taste of power and enjoying it too much.

Instead of reconsiling the country, they're dividing in more & more.

Agree. But the rest (I would have to give some thought.)

One point: there was no overall plan then and I doubt there is now. Just stupid people doing as stupid people do... drunk on power.

South Africa has been owned by the Dutch, the English, the Afrikaaner and now the native Buntu tribes. I really dont mind name changes. Theyre names for imaginary lines in the ground.

I could think of more constructive things to get upset about... but thats just my take, it obviously seems to effect others more than some.

I think the ANC are incapable of governing anything. They want to rule, but actually have no idea on how to successfully run any kind of government (which is actually "serving" - not ruling). And this is clearly becoming evident in the lawlesness, incompetence and general corruption that is spiralling out of control in South Africa. The ANC is emotionally involved (which is evident in the constant renaming and often re-renaming of place, city and other landmark names). Further evidence is the fact of no one willing to be accountable. The government has however become brilliant at one thing: lip service.

I could also think of more constructive things politicians could DO something about; renaming the country isn't one of them.

Um, the latest I heard was the PAC saying South Africa should become Azania - WTF??

I very much agree with you. Which is why I am a firm believe that every SINGLE polititan should be required to undergo a public lie detector test every month. If the CIA can do it to their staff, why not our politians who are in positions of intense public trust?

But back to the whole renaming fiasko and that article you posted. By that persons logic the english are been killed off also.

I see no "Lord Kitchner International Airports" out there. Why am I not pissed off and upset about it? Because its not important.

"Owned" is a pretty strong word. So is "native". Let's not get into the argument about which nation was here first.

My view is that if you try and rub this misinterpretation of history in the faces of people whose ancestors have been here since before 1600 you are bound to get trouble.

Yes, tell that to the Irish, who had one bad patato crop and 'founded' America. The Indians were already there.

Why dont they rather call NEW places what they want instead of renaming places that have been around longer than them?

You are right, native was a bad choice of words. By the definition we are natives, and if you thought I was trying to bring up a who got here first argument, then I apologise in my lack of clarity.

What I was trying to portray was that South Africa has "evolved" many times under many different government, empires, regimes, corporations whatever. They have all changed names to suite the current ruling entity. Its happened many times in the past its likely its going to happen in the future as well.

Every single government that has come into play here has instituted name changes, done land grabs, redesigned flags, fought for freedom (from their perspectives) etc etc

I was not getting into a "who got here first" argument, I was merely pointing out that all previous governments have basically done the same. I dont approve of the practice but a name is just a name. If you feel you need it to cling onto your culture then I cant understand the lack of depth of that culture.

The name of South Africa is not important. The people who live in the world are.

And you have the audacity to say the ANC is causing a racial divide, when you are blinded by your bigotry - if you call leberation leaders terrorists then you are nothing more than a racist and at last your true colours and the reasons for all your posts become crystal clear

You, my friend, are a racist who refuses to accept that the democracy has come to this country, and it is the better for it, move to Orania or to some other rightwing stupid enclave and leave the rest of us to prosper in this amazing country

Aluta Continua
xtermin8or: I agree that any 'defence' of the ex-sadf is misguided (said forumite should spend some time somewhere where these things don't matter, or matter less) but your response is equally misguided. I agree SA is a far better place but I cannot abide the dishonesty, corruption, theft of everything including a large part of our national identity. That/this is not a 'fair' democracy which is something we all voted for.

Oh come on, tell me you're not, please tell me you're not,

BTW Kingrob=Kingmonty=Neil Watson
Neil Watson? Now who is misguided?

And I repeat: your sig says it all - where is the reconciliation there?!

I have no beef with you, on this thread, JontyB or Kilo, I reacted to an overtly racist statement by your boy - Kingwhatever - now by your reaction one can only assume that you share his sentiments - my sig - read into it what you want - but it could mean anything - and that's the way I like it

Read your PM, then you'll understand my reaction.

@ JontyB, understood, and I'll try to be more careful with you - have replied to your PM

I agree

*Slaps himself in the face thinking "did I just say that" *

Maybe this government isn't so divisive.

This is just the beginning of sweeping changes that are to come, did people really believe things will remain the same after liberation?
