We lied - VIP unit

Herman Scholtz and Gloria Edwards , Beeld

Johannesburg - The police's VIP unit has admitted that "some" of the information it released about a car accident and shooting incident involving the presidential convoy had not been correct, but didn't specify which.

Meanwhile, a prosecutor at the Benoni Magistrate's Court confirmed the statements made by an eyewitness that Chase William van der Walt, 23, whose car crashed into a convoy vehicle, was shot.

This comes after national police spokesperson Director Sally de Beer insisted on Saturday after the incident at the Atlas Road offramp on the N12 highway in Benoni, that Van der Walt had injured his arm in the accident.

Warning shot fired
She then said a red VW Golf had driven too close to the convoy. Motlanthe's guards apparently cut off the Golf just before the accident happened.

De Beer said the Golf's driver ran away and the police fired a warning shot.

The man was taken to hospital to treat an arm wound which, De Beer said, had been sustained in the crash.

However, an eyewitness, Martin van Rensburg from Musina, said members of the VIP unit had shot the man and confiscated an SABC cameraman's film at the scene.

De Beer denied that the man had been shot.

"The newspapers have now gone too far," was her reply to the eyewitness's allegations.

On Wednesday, De Beer issued a statement in which she admitted that "some" of the information given to the media had not been correct.

"The gist of the story was correct; some of the details weren't."

Beeld has confirmed that a charge of attempted murder is being investigated against the VIP guards involved.

In court on negligent driving
On Tuesday, Van der Walt appeared in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on charges of reckless and negligent driving.

He was released on R500 bail and the case was postponed until January 13 pending further investigations.

A prosecutor at the court said unconfirmed reports that Van der Walt had been driving with more than the permitted level of alcohol in his bloodstream will be investigated.

The prosecutor confirmed that Van der Walt had indeed been shot.

On Tuesday, Beeld reported that the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) was going to launch an in-depth inquiry into the VIP unit's behaviour.

De Beer asked all parties not to compare Saturday's incident to other controversial incidents in which VIP members had been involved.

"Keeping the president safe is a difficult task and one which his protectors take very seriously."

Yes, because these other "incidents" are soooooo different.
ROFL.
A law unto themselves, we're going to have to drive in convoys and arm ourselves to protect ourselves from convoys.

If blue light convoys were used as they should be, eg. to transport Mr. Prez, then people would give way to them and stay away from them.

The problem is when a BLC tries to push you off the road you don't want to give way "because it is just some stupid idiot that abuses his position" to get to the shopping mall quicker.

BLC as a concept are fine, the way they are used and abused at the moment is the problem.

the gist of the story was correct, we just lied about shooting someone!!!!!

The word VIP has gone to their heads and the problem is only expounded by the attitudes of the people they transport.

I will bet that their charges view all other road users as vermin who do not know their place.

The attitudes of these members do no show an ounce of professionalism and they are a disgrace to the SAPS

Are they even allowed to take the camera man's film? Surely he has a right to film whatever he wants?

I think there are certain restrictions when it comes to the president.

Surely you don't fire a warning shot in the direction of a person you want to warn. The members of the BLC should be dealt with severely.

I wonder how much things will change after the elections?

The unfortunate situation Mr Chase William van der Walt finds himself in is it will be his word against the idiots called the V.I.P protection services.
And unless he can produce sufficient witnesses to the facts he will have a hard time in fighting to prove his innocence.

It just a matter of time before some individual starts shooting back.
Maybe only then will they stop to think of the consequences to their actions.

How would one know if a convoy was carrying the President or a minor government official. Is there a way to tell?

Can you pinpoint what these restriction would be - like taking pictures of the airport or a police station??

A whole melody of lies - why don't they have AA/EE candidates to present these lies.

A warning shot and a member of the public that they're sworn to protect has a bullet how in his arm.

Hopefully he gets a good lawyer that wants the publicity, but then even a good lawyer can't achieve much against a corrupt judiciary.

Are they planning on using their custom time machine to travel back to Sunday and administer a blood-alcohol test; or are they trying to shift the attention away from themselves?

Well the Hospital is on record as stating that he was not Drunk or something to that effect.

I suspect the SABC footage was taken as the footage would have shown who was lying and who was not.

BLC = epic FAIL.

Fk this.. the president is ment to keep US safe! And I take much more care in my own safety than I do the presidents.

VIP are like any bouncer group. A bunch of steroid driven bullies with no brains.
