France bans TV adverts

http://www.news24.com/News24/Entertainment/Abroad/0,,2-1225-1243_2448899,00.html

Paris - Millions of French television viewers tuned in on Monday evening to watch their favourite prime-time shows uninterrupted by ad breaks as President Nicolas Sarkozy's controversial media reform kicks in.

The ban on advertising on France's public television network after 20:00 (1900 GMT) has been described as a cultural revolution affecting nearly 25 million viewers.

"Tonight, everything is changing on television," wrote the popular Le Parisien newspaper, which devoted four pages to the new prime-time programme line-up.

The board of directors of France Televisions voted last month to ban advertising as a government bill overhauling state broadcasting got bogged down in parliament.

The bill comes up for debate again in the Senate on Wednesday and unions have called a strike for that day.

No. DSTv has ads every 2 minutes advertising, well... DSTv
That was hilarious when I noticed it this December. We do not own a TV and I was quite amused when I saw the DSTV adds.

yah, what i don't understand is that i hav to pay for DSTV and mnet, yet most of what i watch is them ripping me off with ad's. why is this? i could understand that national geographic and CNN are free to view channels and need ad-rev but why MNet and channels which we already need to pay for?

Bloody adds. If you add up all the times, you spend 2/3 of your time watching adds and the rest actually watching the bloody program. Oh sorry in SA if you are watching SABC or DSTV the other 1/3 you spend watching bloody repeats!

The answer is PVR or any equivalent.

I record everything I want to watch and then only watch from my play list - Fast forwarding through any commercial breaks.
Otherwise I watch things 10 to 15 minutes behind time, so I can FF through the ad breaks

beautiful

So read a book.

"It's what TV was called when I was a kid" -- spot the reference.

In spain the advert breaks are so long that I sometimes forget what I was watching!
