We tested rechargeable AA lithium batteries

Keep in mind the Bestons are lower capacity to begin with. Not bad but compare price. Also these will generate more heat so not suitable for everywhere.

Those are definitely NiMH I have them.

The Lithiums for some bizarre reason all opt for the USB-C direct plugin method otherwise I would have picked some up ages ago.

Beston is actually a good and well known brand. Also one of the few brands apart from their own that GPBatteries sell. Takealot reviews are generally good but it's a hit and miss wrt suitability just like with all chemistry types.

EBL is pretty well known and been in the game for a few decades already.

Just that they've only become available locally more recently.

I've had the NiMh ones for probably 3+ years now after Uniross seemed to dry up at one point and they are solid. Chargers are also great because they charge individually with proper capacity indicators and not in pairs like most others I've seen.

My biggest disappointment in recent years has actually been Philips high capacity batteries I bought specially for my door bell that just seem to fail one after the other.

Lithium ion batteries are tiny power banks, you can't charge an AA/AAA lithium ion battery in a dumb wall charger designed for NiMH/nickel-cadmium battery, unless of course you want to burn down the house.

No no, I'm not saying I want to charge them in the same charger, just the same TYPE of charger.

Or put a switch on it so that you can flip modes.

But surely there must be some means of auto-detection to enable this anyway, like I've seen on the car chargers.

I would think as technology becomes more advanced in smaller form factors, the cost of producing wall chargers for these new tiny lithium ion batteries is prohibitive when the charging brains of the battery can be built right into the battery itself - if I understand you correctly.

I'm sure it's possible to design a device that can charge both chemistries of batteries, lithium & NiMH/NiCad, similar to flipping a voltage switch on a 9v / 12v charger, but I doubt there's a need with something universal now like USB-C. These AA/AAA batteries are just tiny power banks with the charging brains/overload circuitry inside.

Yes, I have two such chargers. One is a Nitecore i4 (or something like that), the other BT-C3100.

I charge anything from 1.3V AAA to 18650 in the same chargers. I don't have any 1.5V lithiums though.

Yeah. The thing with AA lithiums is that lithium voltages are at around 3.5V so they need to contain circuitry to bring that down.

These are the ones reviewed. Out of stock and I can't really find them anywhere else. Sold out on Amazon too.
