We tested the new Apple TV app

Last month, Apple announced that its new Apple TV app would begin rolling out to over 100 countries, including South Africa.

This new application is available for iPhones, iPads, Apple TV devices, and certain Samsung smart TVs.

I'm happy with my Netflix subscription. I don't see myself subscribing to apple tv+

App didn’t have their offering on there when I last saw it..

Media houses have a problem though, by isolating content they encouraging pirating again..

What a joke. Can rent it on Cell C's Black service for R35.99. Why pay R44.99?

Quality ?

Isn't Cell C Black 720/1080 stereo, vs UHD HD on the Apple? That's worth R10.00

Plus I recall looking for a movie to rent, and Apple was the only one that actually had it

I rented Intruder the other night at R44.99 ... but I see I can get it for R29.99 on Google Movies instead

I don't think Google does HDR though ?

A bit expensive for HDR, but not a bad app I guess

Smithsonian Plus is available now at R39.99pm. Netflix and Showmax don’t have equivalent content. If you’re a doccie lover, it’s worth a trial.

I've got that too.

The equivalent for documentaries would be Curiosity Stream https://curiositystream.com/, which I thought was better. The issue why I canned them is that they were slow and kept blaming me. Their UHD streams would buffer after 10 seconds (and it wasn't adaptive, so it didn't just drop!) on a 50Mbps line. Even their 1080 streams had the odd buffer and was slower at loading.

Smithsonian is alright at the price though - but only done one documentary on it so far

Apple has most movies in 4k hdr (even dolby vision if your tv supports it). Google play has 4k hdr support just not in SA. They start at R29.99 for SD and I think it is R39.99 for the HD version

Has anyone tried renting on the Apple TV app on Samsung TV? I doesn't seem to work at all, just hangs. I have to rent on my pc and then it is available on the TV

This was on a Samsung TV ... no issues renting or navigating or anything. Paid and watched Smithsonian too, no issues.

The only weird thing I find is that you can scroll to '4K and HDR movies' ... click it ... and nothing happens.

Yea you're right - I actually checked the price and was only offered the R29.99 option (on my PC - but on the TV it's R39.99 for the HD version. No mention of HDR or if HD is 1080 or UHD.

If you're right about us having no UHD either, then Google is a rip off charging R40.00 for 1080 and non HDR

Wonder why mine is not working? I have logged out and back in again. Do you have the tv registered as a trusted device or something and in settings do you set it to ask for password on purchases?

Good test is check out the new Pet Semetary movie. It actually says 4K HDR where it shows age restriction etc. It also costs R58.99 to rent. I rented it and pressed the home button on my 2019 Samsung TV. If it is HDR then it shows that if you scroll left to settings at the standard or dynamic picture mode, but nothing. Confirmed this method worked with netflix, amazon and apple tv

I think I set my PC to an authosied device .... there wasn't much to set on the app itself. It's all done via iTunes on the PC

No password required.

Latest FW?

I've got it exactly the same, neweset software on tv. Will check again over the weekend if it has been fixed

Does anyone here have just the normal Apple tv device?

I am looking at getting one, and want to know if Spotify and other apps are available on it please?

Reason being, I need to play music, but already have a sound-bar connected to the tv. So if the apple tv can play to the tv and thus the sound-bar, and has Spotify, then there is no need to buy a boombox/jbl thing.

Thanks!

Is this ATV+ live in South Africa at all ?

I see articles from all over the world, but we're quiet ...
