Johannesburg - ANC Youth League President Collen Maine says they welcome the country's recent downgrade to junk status.

Earlier this week, S&P downgraded SA to junk status. On Friday, Fitch Ratings followed suit.

Maine said President Jacob Zuma was the only president who, through his Cabinet reshuffle, had started the process toward radical economic transformation in this lifetime.

The youth league president was one of the leaders who addressed supporters outside the ANC's Luthuli House headquarters in the city centre on Friday.

Thousands gathered to defend their "political home".

This was in response to an anti-Zuma march held by the Democratic Alliance on the same day.

It was one of many held across the country, demanding that the president step down.

"We are welcoming the junk status. When the economy rises again, it will be held by us," Maine told supporters.

He said they were not worried about the different credit ratings giving SA a junk credit rating.

"We welcome the reshuffle by President Zuma, particularly in affirming former presidents of the youth league. Former league presidents Malusi Gigaba and Fikile Mbalula have been deployed to strategic ministries.

"Minister of Finance [Malusi] Gigaba please don't be captured. If you clown and become a friend of the monopoly capital, you are out," Maine said.

'Defend the president'

Maine said Gigaba's deployment meant the beginning of radical economic transformation.

"We are not talking about inclusive economy, we are not in government, people have not been including us," he said.

"We want the economy in the hands of the majority, hence the onslaught on President Jacob Zuma," explained Maine.

"Zuma has done what our beloved comrade Nelson Mandela failed to do, may his soul rest in peace. He has done what comrade Thabo Mbeki never did; he did what Comrade Kgalema Motlanthe never did..."

The league president also urged supporters to not allow themselves to be provoked, warning that "others" wanted to see them taken to jail. He once again reiterated the need to support Zuma.

"We will defend the president with everything. We will defend the president with our lives," said Maine.

'Junk'-rated debt could cost more than $10bn in lost funds

London - If South Africa loses two of its prized investment grade credit ratings for foreign and local currency borrowing in the turmoil triggered by the sacking of the finance minister, the country could lose more than $10 billion in investment funds.

S&P Global has already struck. In an unscheduled review on Monday that prompted a selloff in South African assets, it cut the sovereign rating for external debt to BB+, one notch below investment grade - or "junk" status in market parlance.

It cited the impact of the divisions in government that led to Pravin Gordhan's removal.

Moody's later placed South Africa on review for downgrade. A third major international ratings firm Fitch warned that President Jacob Zuma's shake-up intensified political risk and signalled policy changes that could undermine its credit score.

Being downgraded to junk by at least two agencies will see South Africa drop out of some widely used global bond indexes that rely on investment grades only and force international funds who track these or who are prohibited from holding sub-investment grade securities to sell.

"The problem has just started in South Africa - there was a lot of complacency on the ratings shift," said Salman Ahmed, chief global strategist at Lombard Odier.

uneducated savages and idiotic clowns run this country ......

This clown clearly didn't get past grade 1.

I am yet to read or hear about the actual pages in this book of "radical economic transformation"

if you are a supporter of the anc, you are either a bad person or a stupid person.

:)
Have to tell you, this is the type of thinking that sets black people and white people apart. Change will come, but it won't come easily if you tell black people they're stupid or bad.

I didn't say that black people are bad or stupid.

if you don't support anc then you are not bad or stupid. Clear enough?

so what should I say? keep voting anc, make a better future?

Did you notice the solidarity among South Africans today? It wasn't political. There were no whites saying the ANC must fall. It's important to choose our battles and our words wisely.

Some blacks are stupid, some whites are stupid.

Stupid is not a word I would use for this small collection of blacks - they are complete brainless fools and no amount of political correctness will make them anything else.

Call a spade a spade.

The fact that you can't see what D3nz means speaks of your own shortcomings ;)
I understand what you mean, D3nz understand what you mean, but some might interpret what you've said as...erm...racist perhaps?

If you are a thief then junk status is beneficial. You ultimately only want to steal as much as you can in your lifetime. Beyond that, nothing matters. There are fewer eyes on a decolonised junk banana republic. Still there will always be more than enough for the political elite to steal. Sure, millions of citizens will suffer, so what? Robert Mugabe still has plenty after destroying Zimbabwe. The regular population has little to nothing but hey that's not his problem.

I can understand why some people vote for the ANC. They are uneducated and they don't know any better. Then there's the ANC youth league who support Zuma no matter what he does. If you aren't uneducated and you support Zuma then DreamKing has a point.

The ANC is backing Zuma and approves his actions. If you back the ANC then you do so too.

If you aren't uneducated and you support the ANC and Zuma then you aren't for the people. You are for corruption, you are for Zuma doing whatever he wants.

These ANCYL dudes are not stupid; they just believe everyone else is stupid... and gullible. :crylaugh:
