The ANC is expected to tell its members to ignore the Public Protector’s Nkandla report if its findings are adverse and to accuse Thuli Madonsela of producing a report designed to influence the outcome of the elections.

On Wednesday, Madonsela is scheduled to release the report into the R208 million upgrades of President Jacob Zuma’s private homestead by the department of public works.

The timing of Madonsela’s report is set to be a headache for the ANC as it prepares for the May elections.

City Press interviewed ten ANC and alliance members in different structures and provinces.

A Gauteng ANC leader said the party will have to minimise the impact on Zuma by questioning the report’s credibility.

“Remember the position of the ANC has been anchored on the security cluster report. When Thuli releases hers, we will emphasise the inconsistency with the security cluster, then the focus will be on the inconsistency and the credibility of Thuli,” he said.

Zuma apparently recons the PP has no power to investigate him ..

A constitutional crisis could be imminent over the powers of the Public Protector as she faces increasing political heat over her investigation into the upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla residence. Daily Maverick has learnt that Zuma has written to Thuli Madonsela questioning whether she has the powers to investigate him at all. This could lead to a legal showdown between Zuma and Madonsela about the relationship between their offices. For now, any findings or recommendations Madonsela makes in her Nkandla investigation report pertaining to the president could be disregarded by Zuma if he believes the Public Protector has no authority to investigate him.

It's ironic as the public protector was created for just this purpose, i.e. should our government or president abuse it's power in the fashion that they have.

The Public Protector was set up in terms of South Africa's Constitution to investigate complaints against state agencies or officials. It is one of the country's "Chapter Nine institutions", established after the Constitution came into effect in February 1997 in order to safeguard human rights and democracy. Others include the SA Human Rights Commission, the Commission for Gender Equality, and the Auditor-General.

The Daily Maverick recons we're heading towards a constitutional crisis. I agree, the ANC has shown it's true colors and we're either going to see whether our consitution is strong enough or this will be the moment South Africa becomes yet another failed African state. I might be wrong, but I think it's moment of truth time folks.

Who the hell has the authority then? So fed up with this BS already. He does what he wants and is answerable to no one. Fsuckn banana republic.

So they're basically admitting to going on a character assassination and will attempt to discredit the report, irrespective of what it says. I give up. No bloody accountability. Elections come first...

I think the litmus test for the failed state scenario will come near the end of Zuma's second term, and in the form of a proposed amendment to the Constitution allowing Zuma to run a third term.

The ANC will come to realise that Zuma is too much of a liability for them. The problem is they will only come to realise this AFTER the elections.

Problem? What problem?

It's one of credibility. He can't be put into a position where the previous corruption charges are raised afresh against him. How they deal with that when his second term nears and end will be decisive. I very much doubt they will hang him out to dry, and a plan must be made.

EDIT: Maintaining credibility on the ANC's part (what little is left).

All animals are equal. Some are don't give a rat's bum if they show off that they are more equal than others.

.......... near the end of Zuma's second term, and in the form of a proposed amendment to the Constitution

Sometime, probably in the first half of Zuma's second term, will be his weekend/public holiday announcement that he is suspending the constitution because of some unspecified threat and will henceforth rule by decree together with a committee of his cronies.

There's that, but also how the ANC deals with losing a national election.

I doubt the ANC losing an election will happen anytime soon, at least not before a 3rd term amendment. Either way, quite concerning. Meh, I am tired of it. Seriously considering emigrating to the States.

Good. Let the elections come. The ANC will suffer the consequences of their actions this time round. Even die hard ANC supporters are giving up on the failed party.

Yep, me too. Well, not the States, but somewhere abroad. Also tired of this nonsense.
