not sure. interwebs say no. waiting for his dr to get back to me.

That's really sad that a 4yr old is mentally ill enough to warrant being put on Risperdal... Sorry to hear about that .

Also, I would not wean a child of a drug like Risperdal without the close cooperation and oversight of a trained professional. Surely there is a child psychiatrist who has been working with the boy up until now?

I don't know the exact reasons or circumstances why the child was medicated, but Risperdal is a very powerful antipsychotic medicine.

he is on a ridiculously low dose but we have seen results and he has improved alot so we want to take him off it.

He is seeing one of the best pediatric neurologists in town. I wanted to know if anybody has been on it and the weaning off process.

I think 0.6 mL corresponds to 0.6 mg of the medicine (http://home.intekom.com/pharm/janssen/risperds.html), which in a 15 kg patient is perhaps not that low a dose.

Personally I would get a second opinion if it were my child.

well this is my concern, he was on 0.3ml for a while. Dr asked us to up it to no more than 0.9ml. i cant convert to mg on this one. but we decided to go 0.6ml for a month or so. his behaviour has improved tremendously so i think he should go off it.

i also want him to join me with some meditation etc. and check if that will keep him calm. but he is a kid so i'm trying it out slowly.

So what's wrong with the kid? Is he hyper active? He sounds like just another active kind from what you describe. You say his behaviour has improved... from what to what?

Where have you ever seen a 4 year old meditate? I think its impossible at that age and rightfully so they should be bounceing off the walls thats what 4yr olds do

Here's what the insert (http://home.intekom.com/pharm/janssen/risperds.html) says:

COMPOSITION
Each mL contains risperidone 1 mg. Preservative: Benzoic acid 0,2% m/v.

So each millilitre contains 1 mg of risperidone I think.

Conduct and other disruptive behaviour disorders in children 5 -12 years of age:
Subjects < 50 kg:
A starting dose of 0.01 mg/kg once daily is recommended. This dosage can be individually adjusted by increments of 0.01 mg/kg once daily not more frequently than every other day, if needed. The recommended maintenance dose is 0.02 - 0.04 mg/kg once daily. The mean dose is 0.03 mg/kg once daily.
The continued use of RISPERDAL must be evaluated and justified on an ongoing basis.
Experience is lacking in children aged less than 5 years.

So the maintenance dose for a 15 kg child would be 0.3 - 0.6 mL per day.

But I would get a second opinion, perhaps from a psychiatrist, about the risks and benefits of medicating a toddler whose brain is still growing, with a psychoactive medicine.

+1000 Personally I cannot understand why the kid would be on it in the first place.

its difficult to describe here but his outbursts were much worse than other kids. he had an evaluation done at two different child specialists. he is an amazing kid and his outbursts are much milder and less frequent.

What is the world coming to when we are giving our kids off label anti psychotics and Ritalin preparations when they are under 6 years old. It's madness.
According to new numbers from the CDC, nearly one in five boys and 11% of American children have received a diagnosis for ADHD. What's behind these shocking numbers?

i hear what you saying. My life has been a living hell this past year and he has been exposed to alot. It's time for peace!

The Specialist Child Psychiatists are swamped with toddlers and oxy teens. There's so few of them left here (that haven't emigrated) and out of those the best ones are next to impossible to see because they are not taking new patients.
