Web Africa ADSL general feedback

Yes, so I noticed. As I see it, one is limited to a set cap/day before being throttled. In my case (4meg line), that would be 10gig/day (or 71gig per week). Does that seem right?

You won't be limited to a daily or hourly limit. If you want to use your full 7 day threshold you're more than welcome to - it'll just mean that you'll be slowed down a bit for the next 6 days.
http://kb.webafrica.co.za/article/A...ity/ADSL/Home-Uncapped-QA.html#Rolling Window

OK, so say on a 4Mbps account - if you want to "limit yourself" to a daily usage pattern, take the 71GB's over 7 days and divide it.
71GB/ 7 days = 10.14GB/ day.
If that makes sense?

So my Red-hat Africa account has t-minus 10 days left.

Account dialed on router logs in to D3 1200 ms + ping i was like WTF.

Quits game

Dialed MWEB 7 days 4 mb trail account and bang 210 ms PING

Thank you Mweb....

Join the club of the masses leaving WA. They even try to entice me with a 30% discount for next month if I stay. One big finger to WA (the middle one if anyone wonders)

Evening guys,
Sorry to see things aren't great :( Could both of you please drop me a PM with your account details, would like to have something arranged for you.

Let me know if you're keen :)

I think it's a bit late wanting to coax people to stay. People don't want to suffer horrendous issues for months on end just to hear yet another promise of "don't go yet, we've got some good things planned." They've been hearing that for the last 6 months already. :p

Also, PM me your client code.

Coaxing, bribery.... addressed above.
Really don't see how you guys see me doing this?! I'm offering a solution and insights on what we're planning to do to FIX the problems. Nothing more.

I'm not a retentions specialist.

As I've also said before, we're working on a CRM solution to link online usernames to accounts which will eliminate this, as well as implementing a list between Justin and myself. How else are we supposed to get your account details from MyBB?!

Well for me, I am done running around like a mad hatter testing accounts, jumping from one ISP to another. I have had a few "uncapped" accounts from different ISPs and none of them are true uncapped accounts IMHO. Buying a Ferrari and only being allowed to drive it on gravel roads during the day, and maybe get to take a spin on the freeway at night is a utter waste of money. I find these "home uncapped" accounts the same. They are only really uncapped under specific conditions, and you sure can't do what you want with them, when you want, and get the line speed you are paying for, for everything you might want to use it for. I know there are issues in SA and ISPs are doing what they can to give us something that might look like an true uncapped account, but simply is not so at the moment. The only true uncapped accounts that I have used has been the un-shaped/un-throttled/un-restricted "business" accounts, which are simply stupidly expensive.

Look at all the "uncapped threads" for the various ISPs and in all of them the same trend follows. It normally starts off with a bang. Then some people jump ship to that ISP, then it starts going pear shaped as the ISP network gets overloaded. Next people start moaning, ISP tries to make nice but can't due to costs. Users start jumping ship again to an "old reliable". The next new uncapped offering comes out, and it starts all over again. I don't think the issues are ever really sorted out, the networks are just less loaded due to ship jumpers, which then presents an image of a better experience. Problem is, the restrictions are still in place and users still get frustrated (albeit a bit less) and the moaning continues.

Na, done with that. I'll stick to my RedAfrica account, it might not be "uncapped", perfect, or exactly what I want, but it definitely is the best value for money around, and has been for some time.

Just my 2cw :D

I have now had an MWeb 1 meg uncapped going on 3 months and have to say I have been very impressed with it. I do not worry about any limits, windows etc and have seldom battled with speeds. Many days I have left a download running during office hours when at work and when I look at stats later can see very limited drops in speed. I have to say at this stage (and hope I will not have to change my tune in months to come) but I have been very impressed and really do think this is a great uncapped account.

Yes I do agree on value for money with the redafrica and myBB accounts. I still have myBB account with WA and use it mainly for big downloads in the DL+ times. Also considering that I get a 6 meg line with the deal, it is great. Thankfully MWeb meets my browsing needs and my frustration levels are so much lower having this account. I guess I have a back up plan with two accounts too :)

I hear you, but (there's always a but;) ) when I had a MWEB account and for my purposes it was close to useless. That said, for others doing the same thing it worked well for them. It made no sense to me, MWEB, or any of the many other people (at the time) who were experiencing the same thing. That is what I am on about. These accounts should just work, period. For some they do, for others they don't, and I am just tired of it all. Having back-up accounts, prepaid accounts, etc all just to try and ensure you have some form of usefulness from being connected to the internet. Maybe one day when Telkom and the other relevant players all come to the party I'll look at uncapped gain, but for the foreseeable future I'll stick with my RedAfrica account, which mostly does what I need it to, although I have to keep usage in check.

Hi WAJeff I have a simillar problem. The latency for me on D3 is mostly around +-1400ms. Yet sometimes when lucky, I get +-240ms.

I have pmed you my account details please could you just sort out the latency :)

Thanks

I totally agree - I have had many many frustrations with my WA account, and others it worked great. It is one of those funny things that one cannot always pin down. Now MWeb is generally great for me and I hope in time that will not change, but I do see that there are some people who it is not working for

I do agree with back up accounts etc and how we should not have to have them. For my sanity I needed the MWeb account and at present am happy with my set ups!

I also got a call from retentions after cancelling my RedAfrica account also offering discounts.

While I loved the value the account gave me, I tried a 7 day trial from MWEB on 4mbps uncapped and have had a wonderful experience. I love being able to play D3 or WOW without worrying about latency and my wife is ecstatic to actually get to web pages now without DNS errors.

Since the trial I have now signed up with MWEB and I am paying significantly more for my internet access but at least I am getting what I am paying for.

I told the gentleman that their senior network guys may give me a call so I can advise them on how to fix their network so at least the rest of the people still using WA can make use of the internet.

Now I am stuck with an account that I cannot use and have to pay for until the end of July. Unfortunately for WA, 3 months is too long for me to be patient and wait for resolutions to basic network issues and promises of discounts is too little too late.

Jeff, for what it's worth, I'll PM my client code, such as it is, for your records.

Just replied to your PM with further details. We know exactly how to fix our network, and are in the process of making massive changes with some really good improvements coming through in the testing phases.

I would also be interested to know what these changes are going to be, can you PM with more details please.

Good luck with the changes and potential improvements.

We're testing new profiles for our Home Capped accounts. Will PM you for more details.

Me and mrlgm007 also both on redafrica gave notice last month so only have 7 days left. Been a good run but all good things must come to an end. Pity as I like your web interface that allows me to see my port number used in the past and phone number in use and allows me to disconnect. The usage meter per hour split being uploads and downloads is also nifty.
However your second domain server recently being down for a very long time without being fixed and when it was fixed you didn't acknowledge it fixed and the downtime period it was for. I feel the matter just should have been dealt with better.
Anyway leaving for another ISP at the end of the month. Might be better might be worse but not having any regrets.
