Web Africa - Connectivity

Hey guys

AFAIK there are no reported issues with browsing or connectivity, I have also confirmed this with our engineers.

Please drop me a PM with your contact details and client code if you are still having issues.

I will then log it for you and have it it investigated on your behalf.

Thanks. :)

There must be a new shaping policy in play ... I have a 4meg line and downloads take forever. Yesterday I downloaded a 68MB file in 2 hours just after my issue. Sites loaded fine and quick. This morning's peak bandwidth in has been 142 KB/s well down from the normal around 400 KB/s I get.

I'm pretty sure something is going down at WA, eventhough they deny it again and again. I was shaped to pieces there. Then they did away with the R15/gb topup, I moved back to Axxess and couldn't be happier. With WA, my speeds would hit 400kb/s for the first minute or so of the download and then just crash to 100kb/s or less. I don't mind shaping, but I believe that 4mb users should be shaped at a reasonable level (maybe 200kb/s - half the speed should suffice imho). Too often with WA my speeds would be absolutely shocking - between 20kb/s and 30kb/s, for weeks at a time. YouTube was the worst, couldn't stream anything without caching first. Happy to say that whether it's YouTube, torrents or HTTP - my speeds are consistently between 350kb/s and 400kb/s with Axxess, kudos to them.

That's not shaping. That would be called throttling although I highly doubt they do that on the capped accounts. So the only explanation would be overloaded/faulty backbone/pipes or some other "normal" internet factor(s).

Throttling, sorry - bit of a noob still ;) What's the difference in the definitions of shaping and throttling? Either way, I switched back to Axxess and I have been unthorttled/shaped!

EDIT: I was on their normal shaped capped package.

Just tried a few random videos and the youtube speed test video set at 360p on my 384k line. Streamed just fine. Constant ~325kbps stream being reported. What line speed do you have?
I tend to get differing performance from different videos firstly because of the differing bit rates and secondly I would guess that the videos are scattered across various servers that ain't always perfectly load balanced.

Few examples please?

Fixed now, but keep an eye on these sites:

Downloads during the day are severely shaped: (10MB Line) - don't try designing a website as FTP is terrible...

Currently WA's connectivity and support is worse than MWEB - never thought I would say this - so much for superior!

ps. above file took 2H15 to download and repeatedly failed.

Hi Michael

Thank you for bringing this matter to out attention.

I have logged this matter on your behalf for it to be investigated.
I have also arranged for a consultant to contact you regarding your query.

Thanks.

Hi Angelo

With all due respect; I am sick and tired of speaking to WA consultants every second day and I am sure they are tired of it too...

Let me know when it will be fixed or if this is what one can expect from WA's connectivity in future, so I can make alternative arrangements.

Regards

Michael
