Web Africa pulls FreeZone for uncapped ADSL subscribers

Question should be asked as to why this was not tested and discovered before launching the free zone for uncapped, this account has lost some of its value.
 
One bad move after another from the cowboyz.

They promised explicity on this forum that there would be no changes to the T&C.

It is quite disingenuous to say that it won't affect uncapped, because they use a rolling threshold, so data use IS MEASURED!
 
I just have to ask, why don't subscribers vote with their feet?? Complaints won't get you what you want.

You trying to tell me that they can't track which website/IP you are going to so they can't record usage properly? Seriously? Sounds to me like they realized that people were downloading crazy and putting too much pressure on the network!
 
Wasn't Freezone added afterwards after so many folks asked for it on the discussion thread? I seem to remember some QQ about that shortly after the service was launched.

In which case they didn't plan on it / techs said up front that there's an issue with it, but PR wanted to satisfy the customers and expected Engineering to do magic. For some reason this isn't working so well, probably why it wasn't included in the first place.

Exactly. They're still the only actual uncapped out there. Everything is a "free zone."

Of course it's only a matter of time before some twit shows up to say "lolololol Mweb sux they kick you off for downloading too much lolololoolol!" when they actually bypassed the shaping.

Ever heard of Openweb Gold? Much better than Mweb's product without any shaping rules.

Um yeah, the unshaped one is R999 per month for a 1Mbit connection. I'm pretty sure you can get an Mweb unshaped 1Mbit for around the same price. The difference being even with Mweb's "shaped" account I've always been getting full speeds. I know it might not be like that for everyone, I've heard people in the southern half of the country complain about the shaping.

Sounds exactly like what Mweb does on their shaped connections. So, in other words, you pay R999 per month for the "unshaped" connection, which is actually shaped, and the same thing you get with Mweb for R299. Not really any serious competition, is it?
 
I joined WebAfrica in Jan 2012. I chose WA for two reasons:
1. The FUP(rolling window with unlimited night/weekend downloads) suited my downloading habits
2. Local Steam Content servers & other FTP download services part of Freezone which do not affect my download window.

My experience so far:
a. On the 9th of Jan they had a network breakdown resulting in little to no internet from around 11:00 - 15:00. I'm not sure if only the WCape was affected by this.
b. Today: Freezone is no longer part of uncapped. "But don't worry, you're uncapped". This is unacceptable because you are now penalised on your download window for a condition that you did not agree to. I fully agree with Lounger that the condition of joining their service has changed.
If WebAfrica cannot effectively manage FreeZone for uncapped accounts and there is no technical solution (which I seriously doubt) then they need to increase the download window size to accomodate the extra traffic generated from Freezone.

That's what I'm doing, I just wanted to know how much time I have before they cancel the current package. I've only been on it for two weeks. It's a good thing I haven't set up a debit order yet. I wonder how many other subscribers they are going to lose.
