WebAfrica use Proxy?

Hi,

Recently my webafrica prepaid has been less than speedy. One of my colleges told me that webafrica uses a proxy, and that's why it is slower than if you got your bandwidth directly from telkom. Is this true?

In addition, is the local IS bandwidth that you buy from webafrica exactly the same as those you buy from Openweb? I know I get get a lot out of an openweb account - they don't seem to monitor the usage that harshly. Webafrica prepaid, on the other hand seems to be checked every hour or so.

AFAIK WebAfrica prepaid is just standard Telkom/SAIX bandwidth, which all runs through a transparent proxy on Telkom's side.

And IS accounts are IS accounts, the monitoring is done by IS not the resellers.

I believe the only thing that's on Webafrica's side is the authentication of the account and bandwidth monitoring. So when you log into the account, you log into them and they cap you but as soon as you're on you just use the same standard saix network.

If you use saix you go through the normal transparent proxies just like everyone else.

EDIT: The IS accounts are all exactly the same and the authentication and capping is done by IS.

Doesn't make a lot of sense - if webafrica in sense sells 1GB telkom accounts on their prepaid, why do they bother to check it each hour whereas telkom checks only 24hrs from the line connection? If a person uses more than 1GB why do they care? It's telkom's account and they are simply re-selling it.

The logical conclusion would be that they are running the bandwidth through their own system/proxy and they don't want people to overuse it.

They care because they're billed per GB so if you use 2GB on your 1GB account they have to pay Telkom for the extra GB. Its just billing though, the account itself is otherwise identical.
