Hi

Anyone using WebAfrica UUNET uncapped account ?

I got a test account for 2 days but for the life of me i could not get more than 5KB/s from any international ftp address.

Funny thing if i downloaded fro http://ftp. then i would get full speed like my current ISP.

Bitorrent gave me 20KB/s for a iso which was quite good.

The only thing that is stopping me from getting this is slow ftp downloads.

Any input ?

Swazi

I know 3 people who are on various uunet resellers webafrica, adsluncapped etc. They all get full speeds on p2p (torrents etc).

Cant comment on FTP.

There is a known issue with certain routers/modems on UUnet accounts were there are slow speed especially on FTP.

The current advice is to set your router to Bridged Mode. Aparently this has sorted out quite a number of people's problems.

Ftp

Would this apply to my router as i get full FTP speed from saix ftp site but only 5K/s from international sites.

I tried setting my router to bridge mode but it does not then give me an option to put in my username and password and have a nailed connection, it's a billion btw.

Can you recommend a UUNET compatible 4 port router thats not too pricey.

When putting your router into bridged mode, it requires you be running your own PPPoE software on your PC through which to dial up. The router won't connect to the ADSL network on your behalf, it becomes similar to a plain old ADSL modem (ie. you will likely find that your firewall, etc. is also disabled or does not function when in bridged mode).

Also, note, because you are placing the router in bridged mode, no other machines connected to it will be able to get internet through the router itself, you will have to share the PPPoE internet connection running on your one machine that "dialed in" with the other machines on the network, likely using something like ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) in Windows.

RASPPPoE is apparently a good PPPoE dialler.

The same problem

WArichard, I'm alos a Webafrica customer and does have the same expierence as Swazi with a netgeat DG834 router/modem.

Would you please answer Swazi before I try "Bridged mode"?

UUNet has been experiencing a large amount of packet loss on their international connectivity, as indicated here:

http://www.mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=18731

This could in part be why you are experiencing such poor international performance. However, it does not seem to be an extremely common problem (as I too use UUNet ADSL from home and in most cases I get full ADSL speed). The Billion router is not a terribly bad router, however when putting it into bridged mode it makes sense that you can no longer specify a username/password on the router as you are no longer using the built in PPPoE software in the router and must instead set up PPPoE manually on one of the machines on your network which you then "dial into" your ADSL account with.

When you switched to bridged mode you are effectively telling your router "I no longer want you to log in for me, nor do I want you to use your own software to do any logging in", and basically it's then up to you to install PPPoE on your PC and log in manually.

The reason why Bridged mode is being suggested as a possible solution to speeds is that there may be incompatibilities between the PPPoE services being offered on the side of the ISP (in this case UUNet) and the PPPoE software on your router, and it may be possible that using actual PPPoE software that is more up to date than the software on your router may solve those problems.

The problem could also be on the side of your actual ADSL connection (line noise, etc.), but that would likely have an effect on your national connectivity as well (something you claim is not the case).

Sorry WARichard, I did not express myself very well. National FTP speeds seems to be very good, as well as national P2P. Is the problem only the UUNET INT Bandwith problem or do you think that bridged mode (the Netgear DG834 doesnt support bridged mode :-() will improve INTERNATIONAL ftp en p2p speeds?

Bridge

I have tried Bridged mode on my Billion Router and it makes no diff.

FTP should be shaped to be a higher priority as it is considered a business protocol (along with SMTP, POP, HTTP, etc.), I doubt it has to do with shaping. However, once the international connectivity is sorted out on the side of UUNet you will likely find performance will increase with every protocol, including international FTP.

Warichard, I've heard reports on these boards that WoW and all other intl. gaming ports are shaped. Is this true or not?

Just to clarify for Dominic and others, WoW is not shaped nor is international, however the pings are suffering due to the packet loss issue. Once the ATM to miami has been upgraded things should return to normal.

At this stage the only protocols being shaped are P2P (in particular Kazaa and eDonkey)

According to what i read in there website they have heavy P2P shaping. So my question is like what p2p stuff still works and what not? From what iam reading here it seems that bittorrent is working but what about things like Kazaa,Emule,eDonkey and the other things out there. Anyone know??

shaping does not mean they cut you off from using p2p entirely, it only means it gets lower priority, thus, any type of p2p software will work

Torrent, eMule, Kazaa is shaped but if your are a bit patient and you don't expect always record speeds, then its ok and still usable. Please remeber packet or portshaping can never be 100%. There is always a workaround.

That's one of the reasons why we're still seeing an enormous amount of BitTorrent traffic sucking up the bandwidth on UUNet's connection to Telkom's ATM network.
