I need to buy a camera for video calling. I was thinking, instead of buying a web cam I could possibly buy a digital video camera. This way I can also make home videos.

I would like to know if it is possible to use a digital video camera, e.g. camcorder as a web cam. If so, do you have any suggestions of cameras that I should get for this.

I'm not aware of any however if you want a very good webcam for R599 Incredible Corruption have a special on the Microsoft Lifecam Cinema :

Yes they are (were?) available. I had a Sony Camcorder, (The one with the digital tape recording), that were also capable of been used as web cam. When the eject mechanism jammed after a short while I took it back to Makro and bought the DVD recording version but it could not be used as a web cam.

I had a Sony TRV-330E camcorder at one stage. Worked just fine as a webcam.
I don't know about new models though.
