Good day all!!
this is my first post and im so glad i could share it with you...

enough with the bull dust, i have a problim, i want to broudcast my webcam on the internet so i can watch it at work, making sure no thugs are steeling my hifi...

whats all the fuss about you may ask, well my isp (wireless connection sharing a few adsl lines) say they are running there internet connection via a linux box, not alowing my ip to be visible on the internet.

i have setup a free website with ftp access and got my webcam software to automaticly upload a pic every second, but this is not cool... i would like to have a java app on the webpage runnding with live streaming video.

any help will be boss-fly

what theyre saying is youre being NAT'd. They can either foreward a port to you off their visible ip, or keep using the upload store that youre using now. Its probably easier that way anyway.

i would realy like to get it working like it should, my isp will not open a port for me as they say it will open up the chances of hack and internet theft.

will software packages like http-tunnel or free vpn help. there must be a way that it can be done????
 
well there is another route you can do it!

dunno how to find out if it is free though!

you get some kind of client software , that hooks upto your cam, then this feeds the cam stream to a server(like a realnetworks server), then you actually view the stream off the (realnetworks server)

I have an extermely nice solution not too expensive that can send me email alerts and is motion activated so that you dont need to record all the time. I also control my lights and alarm system as well as the remote surveilance video from my PDA or Sony Mobile, laptop or any PC in the world through the internet or RAS etc ...

i have webcamxp that records everytime there is motion and will also send me an email telling me, this software also can upload a image to a fpt site every 250ms, but i still want to have the cam running real time via a java app. the software comes with a built in webserver witch works great on my lan at home but just cant get it onto the net grrrrr....

mabye someone knows of a website provider that can help me, ive googled the subject but noting that can help me.
 
Have you tried using something like IP monitor I ase it with my ADSL where the IP changes, I can then access the web page with streaming video from any java enabled internet browser, and view the images, that I refresh respecticvely evry 5 seconds with an arry of 12 sequential pictues. The streaming video is hosted from my own server and links to the IP address that is allocated, to the connection that is linked to the web, so I can watch the video or images as long as I can load the web pages, not sure if this could help. IP monitir is the software that forward me the relevant IP allocated by the ISP that as I understand to make a remote or web connection without the port business being an issue... not sure if that is sufficient to overcome your problem...
 
as point of interest when i first installed the system I prevented 4 vehicle theft attempts in a period of 3 weeks over the April period just utilising the motion activated video surveillance system. The vehicles were parked in the street in front of my properrty at the time. Got some very interseting video surveillance footage, that taught us a lot about how the perpetrators were operating...I installed the system myself as a security measure as I wanted to keep an eye on my property and have the assurance that things are ok and my hifi too :)
 
OK, i use WebcamXP and just finished installing it last night.

Firstly pick a port you want to view it on and do the port forwarding on your router. Then setup a DDNS account with someone like dyndns.org, hopefully your router will support this.

That's how I've got it setup and mine works fine, my webcam is facing my back garden so I can keep an eye on the dogs. Make sure they doing their security work instead of lazing around in the sun;)

Basically what you're doing is telling the router that when a request comes to the public ip for port xxx it must forward the request to private IP xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

Simple really
 
If im not mistaken, you need to forward the port at the gateway. He is sharing a visible ip and the isp will need to forward the port for him.. which, as he said, they wont do.

btw: would be interesting to know if there's a way using the currently open ports..
 
O right, I thought we were talking about a regular ADSL configuration.

Must read posts more thoroughly.

What ports do you have available? I he has a static IP it should be even aesier to attach one of the forwarded ports to the webcam service.
 
Hmmm.... MTN and Vodacom also worked on a shared IP. Many IRC users get frustrated by this since certain networks block a GPRS or 3G line and it kills everyone on it, however getting a solution working within this environment is pretty hard because of the shared IP and shared ports.

The only real solution I can suggest is using ADSL and DDNS or ZoneEdit. I personally use ZoneEdit and my Billion router updates my IP everytime I reconnect to ADSL. It's quite fast, normally 30 minutes or so after changeover my IP updates.
 
Hmmm, 30 minutes? That's extremely long, DDNS is instant. The refresh/update intervals on their DNS servers is probably set to 5 seconds.
 
Agreed. But propogation can take longer and up to an hour. Your own ISP would be instant normally. However I connect from 4 different places and ISP/Connection combo's and have seen up to a 1 hour wait period. Also I have noticed even though my line d/c's I often get the same IP address for 3-4 days before it changes.

That is exactly what I'm saying. My IP changes and I can nslookup or dig@ and dns server in 15 minutes and I get the correct info.

Basically the DNS cache on the other server knows they need to get a new copy of the DNS record every 5-15 minutes so it's always up-to-date.
