Last night I approached Webonline for their stance on their T's & C's for their new 4MB uncapped offering for R499

More specifically, we related to the most recent confession of Afrihost CEO and how they will be dealing with "heavy" downloaders..

Soooo... this was their response

Dear xxxxx,

Please note that we will currently be unable to furnish you with the required information as outlined in your email below which was provided by Afrihost.

The reason for this is that it is a brand new service which has been provided by Internet solutions. As things unfold we will be able to provide you with more detailed information.

We could possibly suggest waiting before applying for this services.

Please contact us in the meantime should you have any further queries.

:wtf:

so my question is this. How can ISP's offer a product (and take your hard earned $$$) when they cant even describe what exactly the service offers... I mean come on! ffs

They merely cannot give hard and fast numbers right now. They need to see the usage patterns of their clients and the effects of usage by other ISPs using the same upstream supplier.

Also, they do not want to chase away clients. It's a tightrope walk and unknown territory.

The next 2-3 years will be like this, with new cables, new infrastructure, new prices, new services and constant migration of clients, before people settle again, with longer term contracts with a "preferred" company.

At least they told you to wait - not sign up for it and find out for yourself.

Yip, at least they replied to your emails. Unlike some other ISP's.

if you dont know what your product is capable of, then dont advertise it to the open public. run closed testing to see what happens first...

these ISP's can take a page out of telkoms book with regards to testing! (8mb trials) (OMG never thought I would say that! lol ) :D

I dont buy this whole, "oh its going to take a while to figure it out" BS. Usage patterns my arse

simple

No offense HTC_guy but on a personal level I find your posts a little short-sighted. This is not a rant forum but a constructive and informative forum.

Seeing as you have 1,500+ posts I would hope that you've read the multiple threads on contention ratios, Telkom network issues, general network overloading and the massive rise in bandwidths used by the new subscribers takign up the cheaper uncapped accounts. This is effecting all companies/ISPs/Tier 1's and Teir 2's. I've spent a very large amount of my personal time over the last 10 days trying to help people understnad the products, differences, issues and pitfalls that the new products have brought about in South Africa. Not just from a user angle but from the business, reseller and heirarchies that are involved.

Was South Africa ready for this?
A resounding 'no' can be the only answer. Are the Tier 1 providers trying their best? It would seem that they are trying... and their best is always relative to service level you are used to. Will the network and infrastructure be able to deal with this? Maybe but it's going to take a lot of companies, who all link together to form the SA local internet, a lot of hard work to perfect it.

MWeb have opened a can of worms that i doubt even they expected and so everyone is runnign with it to the best of their abiltiy. The Teir 2 providers from Afrihost, Imagine, Axxess and all the others should be helping the Tier 1's to do this. I know that I the tech guys in my company are spending hours on feedback and updates and help to improve things. I don't agree with Afrihost taking on the Tier 1 role by shaping their own bandwidth but that's their call. The point is that not one provider can say 'this is our network and how it works right now'.

To be honest, if you'd read all of these threads previously, you should be thanking Webonline for giving you an honest answer and telling you to wait.

... or maybe you want to flame me and my company for laying it out straight and honestly to you as well?
