Website blocking - VERYSTREAM.COM

If the site is being served by a CDN like Cloudflare, chances are that they have set a GeoIP block for SA due to higher bandwidth costs (10 Gbps transit from a leading tier 1 in Europe is about $1500, that same tier 1 is $17 000 to South Africa and a few other regions). I stand to be corrected, but Cloudflare's Video CDN model factors this in and passes this cost to providers who want to deliver content to SA.

Cloudflare's CDN is deployed across every exchange in SA. Cloudflare only hands over traffic settlement free, which means it's not a transit based product. Think of it as a closed network that every other network can access freely at an exchange. If Cloudflare doesn't make the content available in SA, it's impossible for any SA network to access this content unless they peer with Cloudflare elsewhere (where the content is available) and transit it here themselves (like a VPN).

But then every site that uses cloudflare would be blocked not just one.

Remember, the site owner pays Cloudflare to host its content (usually all over the world) or certain locations. So the site owner can choose to not have their site available in a region if they're not willing to cover costs (if there is in fact an increased cost here). I'm guessing this is why you can't access the content there. It could also be that the site owner does not want to incur other costs of doing business online in SA (like VAT); but for whatever reason, the owner of the content has chosen not to allow this content in SA. In that case, like this, Cloudflare won't publish the site on their South African network. All other Cloudflare content is still available to users.

I'd recommend reaching out to the site owner for more information.

unfortunately, we now know the reason. South Africa has blocked our domain for whichever reason, we didn't get a notice.
We might bring up a mirror domain for SA.

That sounds very silly. South Africa does not block anything and if it does happen it would take time because of the amount of service providers we have. It's just a cloudflare issue.

Well this is what I thought - apart from any other considerations - why the one and not the many other similar sites.
 
ftp.verystream.com seems to work because that bypasses the cloudflare CDN
 
I've noticed that thepiratebay has also been blocked for the most part. Cloudflare errors etc.

Yet using a VPN it works fine.

Anyone suspect that perhaps the FPB are exercising their control over internet censorship?
