Hey guys.

I've been approached by a former colleague to design and start a website for a friend of hers.

Note that I've not touched HTML or PHP in 2 years, which is when I left varsity.

What questions should I ask this lady?
How would I go about hosting the site? - Would I be in charge of Apache or whatever they use to set a server up?
Testing the site?
How much should I charge per page or per hour?

I'm a complete and total noob with this.

ANY help would be much appreciated.

I'm in JHB btw.

How mission critical is this site? A hobby site, just an information site or a business site that will handle payments, etc?

If it is leaning towards the latter then you really should get some better help, if it is leaning towards the first two, Google, Wordpress and Joomla is your friend!
:D

From what I gather, its a business site but will not accept payments. If that's the case, I'll redirect her. I don't want to get into the whole transaction deal.

I actually forgot about Joomla :D
Thanks man!

Hi KingMikel,

While our focus is on ecommerce solutions (http://gocommerce.co.za), the following list of questions will go a long way to help you get a feel for what'll be required (and also how much to charge):

  • Do you have a current site?
  • Do you want a predesigned theme or a custom website design based on your logo and company branding? (Theme is cheaper but can be modified to suit you look & feel / Custom design is substantially more expensive)
  • What look & feel do you want? (e.g. Corporate / business, magazine / brochure, funky&colourful)
  • Do you have a logo & company branding colourscheme?
  • Do you have a domain and hosting already configured?
  • What pages do you want on your site (e.g. about us, our services, contact us, team, products / services / gallery, projects,
  • What enhanced functionality is required (sliders, newsletter signup, twitter, social media sharing, maps)
  • What competitor websites do you like?
  • When would you like your website live?
  • What is your your budget?

Hope it helps :)
