I'm looking for a website developer (freelance, once off build) to help someone with a 3-4 page website website.

What I would like to know:
* What is the going rate (+/-) for designing a website?
* Hosting, around 10-15MB should be more than enough, who offers the best affordable hosting?
* Search engine optimization, since this is a once off build I'll have to do it, what is the best way to do it?

The project is a small B&B in Kockstad, Natal, that wants only a front page, a contact us page, maybe a page with the rates and maybe an additional page with some interesting info of the area.

If someone could just design the basic skeleton then I'll take over and input all the text (I suck at website development, but can maintain it.)

EDIT:
Also forgot, .co.za registration, what is the channels to follow to get registered? I know za.net is free, but I think they will be more happy with a co.za

It has been years since I myself designed a website from scratch, if there are easy on-line tools to do such a basic site, then by all means, point me in that direction!

whoever designs it for you, make sure he knows about tourism. designing for a b&b is not the same as your average bussiness.

you have to submit the website to the tourism board and other websites that publish tourist attractions and accomadation.

trust me, you want your site there, you will get 140 times more clients that way.

Hi MyWorld,

There are quite a few freelance designers on this site - I am sure they will stop by here soon. You could also try using a template and filling in the text, assuming you know at least very basic HTML or have a web page editor.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is going to be the most expensive, I would say rather do some research on the topic yourself and see if you can handle the basic factors behind it.

Hi
I'm actually busy designing a guest house website at the moment....
I'm charging the guy R2000.
Check it out
Edit: Link removed before I get Bwannad:o

That site's about 60% completed.

Let me know if I can help you.(Hosting 30per month/330 per year with texo)

Like raven said SEO will cot you a lot if you go to a professional.

The going rates for purely web design (using available graphics) starts at R100per hour.
.co.za you can either register yourself for R50pa from http://whois.co.za or maybe Texo (I use them) for R65pa and then the web space (since it's international you get 1000MB space+8GB bandwidth) for R250 per year (or R25pm).

You could always use templates to build your site with, but I don't use templates so am not familiar with them.

R2000 is REALLY cheap.

I charge around R4000 for a 3-4 page website and that does not include shopping cart or any ecommerse facilities.

that would be a basic template with a couple of photo's, contact page, about us etc. nothing fancy.

I agree that R2000 is cheap but I had to offer him a good deal because he already had a (very poorly designed) website. And he's my first client so I was desperate:)

I think if My World really wants to he could probably do it himself

Why not let the B&B join a Marketing Company or small Hotel "Chain" / "Group" and let them do the marketing of your establishment. They normally then do the websites and feature your product on there as well. Take Three Cities (www.threecities.co.za) where they have hotels and small guest houses for example. Just an idea... or you can try Axis Marketing... www.axismarketing.co.za - they promote properties very well! Or, let them join Travelsmart!! Thats also another option. www.travelsmart.co.za. Look under "recommend" and you can see that they do feature guesthouses etc there. Hope this helps :)

Could you give me more info on adding a site/business to the tourism board? What does the site need and what-not general stuff I should know?

Niccia, checking out the links you posted, thanks for steering me in the right direction!

I can also do this for you MyWorld.
I am a full-time freelance Web Developer.
PM me if you will consider me and we can discuss things further.

Hehe, it starts. ;) Welcome, 2009.

3-4 page website including design? About R3/4k. I have a tourism client (I didn't do the site design though), and they are SAACI members. It's an interesting area to do sites for, I'll give you that.

SEO you are going to have a few options. I do SEO, not SEM (big difference), and SEO is tied irrevocably into the coding of the site. Check out Wikipedia for more info.

Oh, and good luck. I'm too busy to be able to take on another site ATM, but I'm here if you need advice.

*sigh* I'd love to help out, but decided that I'm doing less freelance jobs this year. Focusing on health, family and spiritual well-being and all that stuff, ya know? ;)

Thanks all, this has been a tremendous help!

Could someone explain SEM to me? I take it stands for Search Engine Marketing?

How does it work or where do I go to find some info on this?

bun in the oven already? I agree though - life is short!

Hi MyWorld,

SEM is when you market your product on search engines via paid inclusions / keyworks. It can be very expensive if you do not know how to choose effective keyworks, etc.
