WebUSB API created by Google developers

I don't like the idea. I want less of my hardware exposed to websites! Imagine if they can turn on your webcam without you knowing?

I suspect the target here is for authentication dongles and the like. Or if you do have a robot arm you can code your application to run on a browser and still directly interface with your hardware.

This is a great idea, as long as the user must manually authorise the usb port before it can be used.

I know some mcu dev boards have cloud based IDEs, so this might help with that type of thing.

I wonder if this is a way for android devices to communicate directly with Google, instead of having to wait for windows/linux drivers to install. You can simply allow Chrome Browser to let the device work.

However, does this mean we're back to the days where only the vendor has the keys to the drivers, vs opensource that can be kept up to date easier?

+1

They can already turn on your webcam without you knowing it, Browsers already have access to this and if the browser if exploited, the privicy settings which asks you for permission to use your webcam/microphone are ignored and on.
