Weekly load-shedding to continue until April - Report

South Africa’s power utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. anticipates electricity shortages on a weekly basis for the next three months, raising the specter of regular power cuts through April.

Eskom’s “likely risk scenario” over the next three months shows a deficit of more than 2,001 megawatts to meet demand and reserves, according to its most recent system status report, starting in the week of Jan. 11.

Can you imagine the loadshedding if the lockdown didn't happen? Demand is way down due to job losses and company closures and they still can't keep the lights on. If lockdown wasn't around I think we would probably be on around stage 8 loadshedding daily by now.

Actually demand isn't way down, the only time it was way down was during Level 5 and 4 lockdown. If demand was way down we'd not have load shedding. The issue is that they just don't have generation capacity, they ran things into the ground and now they can't be fixed. So with a supposed 45Gw capacity there is 8Gw that will never work again, plus all the other failures.
So we in summer normally demand 27Gw to 29Gw but Eskom can only at best give us 37Gw with everything 100% running, then in winter we push demand to almost 35Gw. Which is what puts us in the pickle.

I'm sure there are many grand tenders being "scrutinised" for a solution that will take 10 - 50 years of construction.

I've heard how the transparency of ordering & receiving said service may be an "issue" in "efficiency".

If I'm not mistaken the preliminary assessments have already been done for that solution regarding connecting to infrastructure from x & y locations.

I'd assume some environmental aspects would be part of their brief to ensure faster commitments however I cannot recall viewing anything on this.

I see the Gov like to use the word struggle. Struggle is a mindset. They can't even grasp the idea of powerships as they struggle to understand it. I see somebody commented about his teenage son making plans to go. A very wise move. I made the move in 2003. Best thing thing ever I did and of course my work, living conditions etc. Made the mistake to go back in 2015, like stepping back into the stone age. Will never go back, nor missing it.
