Weight Loss Thread 2014

Reading in a lot of places that sugar alcohols mess with your gut flora.
Should have made the connection when I already knew that the sugar-free stuff in gum destroys bacteria in the mouth.
All of you using these "carb-free" sweeteners: Have you noticed any issues with your gut?

can you provide some references? I know Tim Noakes recommends sugar alcohols over other non nutritive sweeteners so I'd be curious to see what's being said elsewhere, the whole issue of alternative sweeteners is is like nutrition itself, it's complicated :D

went shopping to stock up a very empty pantry last night, it's like the price of food seems to have doubled in the past few weeks whilst I've been away on leave, Woolies want over R10 for an Avo

Hmmm that's interesting... Xylitol is well known for destroying pathogenic bacteria in the mouth, and I had never considered it might do the same in the gut. I avoid sucralose because there has been some concern about gut flora with that as well.

I don't even look at the prices on woolies avos, I just buy them, because when I buy them anywhere else they are just a disappointment.

That goes with most veg and fruits, I only shop those at Woolies, at least I know what I'm getting. I've been greatly disapointed by purchasing FnV at PicknPay and other stores.

not much time to do proper research this morning however I did find this on PubMed

The influence of dietary xylitol on the quantity and quality of faecal microflora was studied in Wistar albino rats, CD-1 mice and healthy human volunteers. In animals, the effects of xylitol adaptation and of 4-wk xylitol feeding were examined. No major changes in the numbers of total aerobic or anaerobic bacteria, aerobic streptococci, anaerobic streptococci or yeasts were observed, although there was evidence of a dose-dependent decrease in the numbers of aerobic streptococci in the faeces. However, xylitol feeding caused a clear shift in the rodent faecal microbial population from Gram-negative to Gram-positive bacteria. In human volunteers a similar shift was observed even after a single 30-g oral dose of xylitol. All animals were capable of adapting to 20% dietary xylitol and an accompanying enhancement of the ability of caecal and faecal flora to utilize xylitol was observed.

This is the first time I've been under 80 in many years. :wtf:

Generally, I've been around 86/87, and a couple days before I started charting, I was 83 or so.

I think you've got a mental block going by convincing yourself that Woolies is better or you don't know how to pick FnV.

well done :)

How long have u been low carb?

For about a month i've gone without any sugar at all.

Next month i'll try to do the same with salt.

Only downside is I don't drink any coffee anymore as I couldn't without any sugar. Perhaps its better this way.
I've maybe drank one cup the entire month.

Currently i'm at 110 and my mission for the next month is to wake up an hour earlier and ride bicycle for 40 - 50 minutes everyday.

Sugarless, saltless diet + exercise worked great for me in the past.
I will have to wait till feb to get my bicycle sorted out first. Its been in storage for about 6 years. that is why i'm 110 and not 80.

About a week, I think.
Haven't had a drink in nearly two weeks, which also always causes me to lose a couple Kg.

As you burn through your glycogen stores you will lose water. If I recall correctly the body stores 4 grams of water for every gram of carbohydrate, so for the first week or so you will see a lot of weight loss from water. It's important to know because if you re-feed carbohydrate you do gain back that water immediately.

add me in aswell.

current weight: 76 kg
goal: 71 kg and lose the belly fat
body fat: 17.6
age: 26

Yep, aware of that.

What is the best way to lose belly fat? I don't drink/ smoke and I'm a vegetarian.

I started going to Virgin Active last week and right now I'm mainly focusing on Cardio exercises. I just want to get my general fitness up to scratch. ( 20 minute treadmill, 20 cycling and 10 minute rowing) that's all I can muster right now.
