Weight Loss Thread 2014

What does RBD stand for and how is it made? I see it mentioned around coconut oils often.

RBD stands for REFINED, BLEACHED, DEODORIZED. This is one of the lowest quality types of coconut oil one can get. It is a heavily processed product, and will typically contain toxic or chemical compound residues, as well as provide a nutritionally inferior product.

According to Wikipedia:

The dried copra is placed in a hydraulic press with added heat and the oil is extracted. This "crude" coconut oil is not suitable for consumption because it contains contaminants and must be refined with further heating and filtering. Unlike virgin coconut oil, refined coconut oil has no coconut taste or aroma. RBD oil is used for home cooking, commercial food processing, and cosmetic, industrial, and pharmaceutical purposes. RBD coconut oil can be processed further into partially or fully hydrogenated oil to increase its melting point, producing some trans-fats in the process.

Interesting!

Thank you.

If it is so inferior and contains all these extra toxins...I wonder why no note of this is made on the nutritional label? Also why other sites merely state a minute difference - certainly nothing to the effect of the above.

I think that was some nut-job level vegan type site, so there's bound to be a little hyperbole.

I'm not sure what brands you have been looking at, but I reckon the Crede unflavoured is probably still okay - Their normal coconut oil is the best I've come across by far.

Where are the Lindt specials at? This R35 business is sommer nonsense

Check for Wawel dark chocolate 90%. It was R12.99 for the past few months. Last week the damn shelf was empty. I know I bought only half the shelf.

Does it actually taste nice? I've never heard of it before and R12.99 sounds a bit suspicious....

I'm a fan of the millbrook oil. It comes in bigggg buckets! http://www.millbrook.co.za/coconut.htm

I personally would not touch a refined coconut oil. Damaged fats wreak havoc in the body...

Awesome, where can I get it though? Their sales page says they are not currently trading, and there's no list of anywhere that stocks the stuff.

Seems I need to take a walk in Durbell Pharmacy...they stock a large range of health foods and options. Also carry Crede range I see now. Noted for future use.

Guys, could one grind almonds in a coffee grinder to make flour? The stuff is just too rediclously expensive to buy the flour off the shelf. Buying a kilo of raw almods at a nut wholesaler costs about the same for 300g of flour in the shops. Thoughts?

Hmm no I don't think so.

Yes you can. Just like you can shove oats and flax seeds into a blender to create oat flour and flax seed flour - you can shove almonds in to a blender to make almond flour. However I think if you grind almonds they become a paste due to the oil they carry...so you would more than likely end up with almond butter paste?

Only one way to find out...do it! Then report back :D
