Hi folks

I've got a weird problem that calls from my wife are blocked - it just kicks into voice mail and I don't receive these voice mails or any SMSes from her. I'm on MTN and she's on Virgin. I've switched our SIMs to other phones with the same result, so it's not phone related.

I can only think it's happening at the MTN level. Any ideas?

Call MTN and ask them for the code that you need to type into your phone.

MTN is #330*0000# to disable call barring which was successful. No joy though - she still can't phone or SMS.

If I route the landline to my cell and she phones the landline, she gets through to my cell.

Can she call other MTN numbers?

I've noticed I can't call certain numbers from Virgin or Cell C if the phone is set to roam on the Vodacom network.

I don't know if she can't phone other MTN numbers, but it can't surely be phone related as I've switched SIMs to other phones.

Nashua Mobile said the call barring can take 2 to 24 hours to activate, but to kickstart it one can switch off the phone, remove battery, wait 2-3 minutes and the switch on again. Nothing so far.

Of course, I never activated call barring in the first place.

Have you tried calling MTN and telling them about your issue?

I've gone through my service provider twice. We'll see again tomorrow if it still persists.

Is it possible for some security software I've put (and paid for) on my phone (Nokia 5800) to write to the SIM itself and as a result of bad coding or incompatibility with local systems to reject calls from that number? My wife is the one that it alerts when a "foreign" SIM is inserted into the phone. Just wondering about that one. I disabled the software module and still the same, BTW. Also registered her SIM on my phone.

It's very hard to say when it started - she was overseas for three weeks, took one of the other phones and bought a SIM card there, so it was only when she came back that the problem became apparent.

I called in a favour and phoned an MTN network technician we're doing a transfer for. He says it might be a network porting/routing issue - I've gone from MTN to Virgin and now back again, while my wife went from MTN to Virgin. But he will check it out and come back to me.

No names, but I will report back.

Some feedback on this issue. It appears that Virgin never properly updated the routing tables when I ported back to MTN. The result is that I am unable to receive any calls or SMSs from Virgin. My friendly support person is helping me out.
