Hey,

ive posted this under adsl, netwroking & broadband cos it covers most of all of those..

i just started having this problem on saturday evening

my pc all of a sudden gets EXTREMELY skluggish, eg. if i move my mouse across the scrren its as tho its moving in mud & dots across my screen, ive found that if i disconnect from the net everything is fine but as soon as i go on again its sluggish once more...

weird as i said so its not my pc but in fact something with maybe my router or netword / card or hub

im connecting thru bridged mode with my router but the router is connected to my hub & then to my pc & this has been working fine for just over a year.. this is the first time ive found this... & only from tonight..

i thought it may have been a trojan but why would everything be fine if i disconnect from the net?

ive checked to see if its my network card but i cant seem tio find any that work or maybe its my pci slots i wouldnt know but ive tried 2 cards in 2 slots & none are even picking up in windows or device manager

well my download speed goes to about 0.1 kb/s when this is happening but nothing is running or using more resources than about 10% which is about normal.. grabit just stopps, utorrent stops & i can barely use my mouse

until i disonnect then everything is perfect

it happened again at 9pm tonight i disconnected for about 10min then re connected & everything was fine for about 1.5hrs, then it happened again... i disconnected again, swapped out netwrok card etc but the one i use is onboard..

i also share my bridged mode connection which has been working perfectly for about 2 years in this config but until yesterday this all started.. unfortunatly the router has only one port

im normally online about 50+ days so maybe its over usage

oh & my pc temps are cpu 30, gpu 38 (only heat sink no fan.. cheapie) mobo 36 so everything is stock standard..

everything is fine now but its probably gonna happen again soon.. till then im confuzzed

ok so ive figured out the problem...

its the ICS, if i disable the internet connection sharing then everything works fine but as soon as i enable it my pc dies it feels like im encoding 5 movies on a 386 pc!!!!

does anyone know what i can do to fix this as i really have to have internet connection sharing for my network 5 pc's on the lan all needing internet access

*shrug* when things start malfunctioning i usually format/reinstall, but there are some hardcore anti-format geeks around here

Routing network traffic is not cheap in terms of resources, which is why you often have dedicated hardware to do that job. Consumer-grade NIC's and their drivers are generally not up to the task, unless they have been designed with high-throughput in mind. In addition you are applying firewall rules (I hope?) to each packet that comes into your network, disassemble and re-assemble the TCP connections, keeping track of all the NAT port information, etc. All of this will work fine, until you put load on the machine itself (decode H.264, play a game, Windows background tasks, etc). Then you may run into issues where your CPU or NICs become a bottleneck on the system.

The best solution here is a dedicated one, like a router, or perhaps an efficient firewall appliance you can install in a VM on your machine.

You don't say which Windows you are using but if it is XP, then I agree with "bekdik". Internet sharing in WinXP does not work so Lekker. Set the whole system to routed and that will solve half your problem. The other half is that you have had your installation running for 3-4 years. By now you probably have a registry file the size of a battleship. If you want to keep WinXP in overdrive you should re-install every 12-18 months. Use a disk image to make the process quick and easy. Using registry cleaners etc is a waste of time. The registry cleaner that gets rid of ALL the garbage and bloat has still got to be invented. Good luck.

ok. Windows XP.
been working for 3-4 years but not on the same windows installation :S
been usiing it on or about 4 pc's in total, the other 3 are not with me as they died tragically in a lightning storm 2 years ago.
so even with 2 new computers & routers & all the new insids etc my "config" still kept working
but now does not.

server: 1 NIC connected to adsl router (dhcp server) & then connected to a network port (hub) switch whatever you wanna call it!!
now it used to work with the ICS like this but now its not cos i bought a new router (adsl) as i thought it was the router that was forked but its not it seems to be the pc itself / pci ports as no new netwrok card (the ones ive tested) are picked up.

i'll report back as soon as i find something that works.
