Ok so I know I'm new here. My name is Chris and I live in Cape Town.

I decided to spend R300 on cap at the begining of this month so I could finish all my Steam updates and get it over with since I hadn't played tf2 (one of my favourite games) in about 2 years.

After finally getting it done I find I have a latency of about 200ms. I went to go try out CSS (it's my safety net) and I get about 140ms. This really confuses me because last month when I played css I was getting only 50 which is normal for me for css and tf2.

I really don't get wth is going on. I can't play online anymore :/

I've got a 384 line and I'm with Telkom. Can anyone help please!? Or give me ideas of things to try.

Either Steam is still doing stuff in the background or there is a problem on your line or it could just be your ISP ...... unfortunately, only one of those is easy to resolve.

Have you done some speed tests and ping tests to see if it is the line? Remember to quit steam before testing.

ping saix.net
and
ftp.is.co.za

If it's 50ms, problem is not your isp or line. If above, it's your line or isp. Steam can't raise your latency, unless theres downloading going on in the background. Download bitmeter 2 over here http://codebox.org.uk/pages/bitmeter2. You will be able to watch your traffic nicely.

Well I did the ping tests and it shows pretty much what I've been seeing and I don't know how to explain it.

Ping Ftp: 200ms
Ping Siax: 24ms

I get the same thing with the steam servers. The WAGE ones I get 31 latency and with the IS ones I get between 190 - 230. I mean I know there should be difference because to my knowledge WAGE is in Cape Town but to get 230 from Joburg is just stupid.

It used to be 30 for Cape servers and 50 for the rest. :/

WAGE is fun and all but I"m not a fan of playing only surf.

Please can someone help me?

Now both are doing ~140ms. Is this a sign that they are messing around with my line? I use Netlimiter monitor btw.

I don't want to have to call Telkom. Everytime I do a little piece of me dies...

There seems to be a problem with several exchanges in the Southern Suburbs (for about 6 weeks now) - it doesn't appear to be ISP related. At first the latency worsened from around 7pm to 11pm, but lately it's been almost the entire day from about 9am, only dropping off at around 11pm. There's lots of comment on this thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/268237-LATENCY!!!
