Hopefully some bright spark here can help me out....

My dad asked me to help him setup his ADSL yesterday so I went around and plugged in the modem and tried to browse to 192.168.0.1 but I couldn't.

I ran ipconfig and saw that I had been given a valid IP and I could ping 192.168.0.1 with no problems.

I then took out my laptop and connected it to the router and browsed the router fine. After I had finished setting up the ADSL I could browse the internet perfectly from my laptop and the other laptop in the house but the main pc with Vista on it could not browse the internet.

I could ping and resolve www.myadsl.co.za from the main PC and even run Windows Update but still no browsing?

Any ideas?

I was logged on as an administrator
my laptop also has vista and works
after clearing the cache the main pc could still resolve DNS names

that's all I can think off right now, it's weird

What is the output of ipconfig /all from the main PC?

ip address: 192.168.0.2
subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.0.1

Is the normal stuff, I am not near the main machine now for the exact details though, what are you looking for? maybe I checked it?

Is Windoze [searchforum]ICS[/searchforum] enabled? - if it is, then 192.168.0.1 will be the IP address of the Windoze PC that has ICS enabled, which would clash with an ADSL router also using 192.168.0.1 as its IP address.

hmm it shouldn't be but you may be onto something....

I will have to get someone to check... I'll let you know...

lol it's not only the browser, normal network browsing doesn't work either...

I go into the Network and I can see my laptop on the network but I cannot browse to it.

so, seeing as you have all this info that you choose to trickle-drip-feed us with, perhaps you are more qualified to go fix it yourself?
just a thought.

I go into the Network and I can see my laptop on the network but I cannot browse to it.
assuming your shares are set up correctly sir, you have a firewall problem.

apologies that I didn't restate the 3 hours I spent trying to fix this last night...

My firewall is disabled and I don't have another one so I don't know how it can be a firewall problem?

sorry gavin, not in the best mood today.
having a similar situation at work today where i am being asked for questions, but the info is coming in little bursts.
I dont mind helping, but I really hate it when the conversations goes like this

"problem"
"answer"
"oh no, it isnt because...abc"
"so then maybe answer 2"
"oh no it isnt because of def"
"so maybe answer 3"
"no, i tried that already"
"blow me, you are wasting my time"

as to your issue, I had personal experience with this last week...tracked the problem down to bullguard antivirus. same as you, I had disabled all firewalls.
but because bullguard antivirus also incorporated a firewall (which is why it is called anti-virus???????????!!!!!!!!!!! dumb b@stards). drove me mad for an hour or so, could ping, could resolve names, couldnt browse.

lol no problem trust me I have the same experience with clients,

I will see if there is possibly another anti-virus on the machine and whether ICS is enabled and get back to you all.. I do appreciate the help

Its the firewall,In vista even if you disable the firewall,it still works..weird.I had that problem.Go to the firewall exceptions and tick what you need.

Well that's just dumb?

Anyway I didn't manage to get past my parents yesterday so I don't know if anything worked, I will try go past tonight though..

thanks
