Ok so are you using VS2005 SP1 because I've never experienced these problems but I have SP1 installed. Also I've created some fair sized web-pages, none violated the HTML specifications...
Microsoft MSDN has the update and it's hosted on a Akamai server (well everything Microsoft is hosted by them) so you can use local-bandwidth.
VS2008 isn't without bugs either, there was a mayor bug before SP1 that slowed it down to unusable standards.
