Well my cousin got married to an English chap over the weekend at a wine farm. So all the bridegrooms friends and family came down to SA for it.

His best man arrived with his wife and 2 kids planning to stay for two weeks and have a lekker SA vakansie (beach, biltong, braai, etc) once the wedding was done. They rented a house in Camps Bay for the duration. The night they arrive they're woken up by a couple of guys holding knives to their children's throats and told that if they don't give them everything of value the kids die.

Needless to say they're on their way back to England today. (luckily no one got hurt, well physically anyway)

I wonder if it was just random (bad)luck that robbers picked that night to rob that house while it had tourists in or if there was some sort of tip off from someone.

We have had a few clients who are followed from the airport already. Seems like the f$ckers get tip offs from airport staff or something as to who has how much money. Happened to a chinese diamond salesmen some months ago aswell.

Lovely country this. Almost as awesome as root canal.

****ing hell... I shudder to think whats goign to happen and how many people will Die!!

I sued ot live in Woodstock in Cape Town, just below the Holiday Inn htere... Often enough we would be chilling in th elounge when we would see a whole group of Tourists, obviously staying at the Holiday Inn, walking past the house down into Woodstock, Camera's and all...

If we saw them we would run outside and tell them to go back.. The part of woodstock where I stayed looked okay, buit it gets really dodgy really fast. The problem is that Tourists are just not asvy enough. Dont get me wrong, there will be plenty of crime that nobody would have been able to avoid, but there will be a whole resultant of tourists going where they should not and not paying attention to their surroundings.

Makes you think about all those bull**** crime stats they publish where they say crime has dropped.

Seems to me like its doubling every day!

It is so sad to here these things... Family from the UK wanted to visit over December, but canceled the trip, because of such reports.

I thought there was no crime in Camps Bay. ;)

Sorry to hear of the incident. Hope they get over it soon. :(

Waite till the football hooligans arrive, may be interesting times that lay ahead.

Crime has not dropped - the people who is responsible for giving the stats just manipulate the stats in order for us plebs to believe everything is ok.
I've heard many horror stories of how this is done and believe every single word.

this country blows:mad:

This country does not blow - certain people in it, and the government might blow but not the country as a whole.

I love Cape Town and find it very hard to even think about leaving, although thinking about my kids future, makes me want to immigrate.
Cape Town is still the most amazing city, despite the crime.

One of my favourite things to do when a friend from oversees comes down, or i meet a backpacker perusing through our country is to show them around and let them experience first hand the beauty this country can offer.
Every single time i do this, i get immense satisfaction listening to them saying how beautiful this place is etc etc
One of the reasons im still here

Dress up like a tourist and meet me in joburg station, i will give you R2000 if you make it 200meters up noord street without getting mugged.

I lived in the apartheid era, and i dont care 10 fu*ks what others say...It was a pleasure to walk the streets those days...No murder...No threats...Flourishing Economy...Light on througout the day/night...no robberies...Anyone here would like to prove me wrong on the "statements" i have just said?? GO FOR IT!!

PS: sorry 2 hear about your cousin and family...Please tell them at least not ALL of us treats people that way :(

Unfortunately the quest for beauty isnt a human instinct.. Safety, Food and reproduction are :D

I know this country is a wonderful place, I'm one of the first to say it but it's just this type of thing that gets you down and makes you feel down right embarrased.
I mean it's not like they where being the 'ignorant tourist' and walking around in dangerous areas flashing cash and cameras, they were in the house sleeping ffs.
I'm feel for the kids though, they moved into a hotel the next day and one of the staff (a black guy) came into the room to deliver a message and the kid just started screaming. I hope she'll be able to get over it and trust black people again, it'll be a shame if SA turns them racist. I know not all criminals in SA a black but the ones that robbed them just happened to be.
