The High Court in Pretoria granted the Tshwane Metro Council permission on Tuesday to put up welcome signs for the 2010 Soccer World Cup which refer only to Tshwane.
Rights group AfriForum, which opposed the application, said in a statement it regarded the ruling as "unfortunate".
This, after it obtained a court interdict in 2007 that the name Pretoria may not be removed from road signs.
This interdict still applied, but the court ruled that the interdict did not prevent the council from erecting welcome signs with the name Tshwane printed on them.
"AfriForum... regards it as unfortunate that the judge ruled that this interdict does not apply to signs which the Tshwane Metro Council intends to put up specifically to welcome visitors to the city during the 2010 Soccer World Cup Tournament," said chief executive officer Kallie Kriel.
