WEP Cracking

I thought they would have killed this thread long time ago, but got back to work and its still going....
While were on the subject:Anybody know of any good tools that i can use to get access to a lekker BMW thats parked in my neighborhood?
I'm not really a thief but i would like how to steal one for when the time comes! Please help me out!!!!

Short the wiring, fry the compu box.... Push it to your house and pay +- 20G's for a new compu box.... Have fun !

LMAO !:D

Messing around?

Sure, if you consider yourself as accomplished a hacker (for lack of a better term) as others, which would place you in an elite minority.

Otherwise you’re just stuffing around, and a likely majority are just simply stealing!

Hmmm.... ok.

It's one of life's sweeter ironies that this in itself results keeping the lazy away from the toys they say they want, but aren't prepared to work for!

Well said bdt :)

Cheers, Nick

This is an inappropriate thread because even if you are using this for simple learning purposes and even if it could simply be googled, I feel MyADSL shouldn’t be associated with these kinds of activities! Wrong!

Please note the above quote

Thanks for the compliment bdt but if you open your eyes just a little more than your narrow mined bombastic I’m always right view point you might note that in my above post (quoted here for easy reference) I was not telling Ultra he shouldn’t do it, I’m not his dad!

Oh dear, someone thinks he's being clever by quoting the very head-in-the-sand statement that earned him the characterisation in the first place! Sorry compadre, not only does it fall short of advancing the topic, it could even be construed, dare I say it , as narrow-minded. Oh, and as to the charge of bombastic :D (just call me Mr Lover Lover): aye, verily and yea ..but so what - that's partly my style and the rest my need to get my view across as completely as possible; one that, IMO, is well worth airing. You're entirely welcome to not approve, I don't care about you either!

What I was trying to say is that MyADSL should not be associated with this, considering the fact that MyADSL is a forum arguing for fair internet connectivity!
Oo-er, someone really was fannying about back when lessons on critical reasoning were being held! You've quite thoroughly failed to get the idea that this community is quite big on the notion of freedom of expression, this very thread being a sterling case in point. And, as it happens, the majority opinion has been to shoot this upstart down: let him get off his lazy arse and WORK for the knowledge if he really wants to learn (and I suspect twiga was largely taunting with that link to to airsnort: it's harum-scarum enough to get going in 'doze (ahh sod it, I'm not going to bother posting the link) and as for Loonix: well, I somehow don't see our budding üßër hÄxxØr even using that, much less being proficient enough to be doing this).

And that, sir, embodies at least some of what this community holds dear.

Have a nice day now

Oh dear, someone thinks he's being clever by quoting the very head-in-the-sand statement that earned him the characterisation in the first place! ....

Oo-er, someone really was fannying about back when lessons on critical reasoning ...

Hmmm, very nice retort well thought out (I mean that), guess I must have touched a nerve there!?

And for the record, just so that you don’t have to feel completely wounded by my comments, and so that you don’t have to feel totally justified for your rude manner, I said what I said because of what I saw as a rather offensive post by yourself.

Let me explain this as I see it! You posted for Ultra’s better education, fine; however you felt a need to take a pot shot at me in the process for disagreeing with the spirit of the thread, fine. In the spirit of your post I felt it appropriate to offer you the same courtesy. (I consider that fine too, you obviously don’t)

But without trying to act like the better person (and I really mean that, no sarcasm) you might want to take note of the one thing…

You're entirely welcome to not approve, I don't care about you either!

At no point did I say or insinuate that I would not care for your opinion or you or anything as such. If you can not offer the same courtesy that’s your business and a reflection on you I guess. If only you gave manners a quarter of the effort which you gave this post, we would not be disagreeing and we would (maybe) still have a small degree of respect for each other (maybe again). Either way, I do not partake in this forum in that manner so I will read your future posts in the same way I did before today; with interest in what you have to say!

P.S. thanks for correcting my spelling (the red is a nice touch, really teacher like; I feel educated now) sorry if I don’t offer you the same courtesy.

Waahahahaha! Brilliant, quite possibly the best retort you could have chosen, and so well executed. Thanks for a great read - really, I mean that ..I laughed uproariously! Actually, I was only mildly thinking of mentioning this thread to my friends, but your delightful post really ups the ante, well done!

Hmmm, very nice retort well thought out (I mean that), guess I must have touched a nerve there!?
Heh, let's not get ideas above our station shall we? You merely inflicted stupidity at me, something for which I have vanishingly small amounts of patience ..but that's OK, you're as much welcome to your opinion on something as I am - and equally as entitled to be wrong about something ..again, as I am. (Isn't it great how opinions work that way?) You had the wherewithall to take a bit of a dig at me too - good on yer sport, I so seldom get some real entertainment. But if you aren't yet, you should be aware I'm inclined to respond in kind.

And for the record, just so that you don’t have to feel completely wounded by my comments, and so that you don’t have to feel totally justified for your rude manner, I said what I said because of what I saw as a rather offensive post by yourself.
Wounded? ..moi? Heh, sorry sport; no sale. As to "rude", allow me to introduce you to a couple of 'bombastic's friends: meet 'flamboyant' and 'boisterious'. I understand completely how you could misconstrue a vigorous response as rude though, I've learnt that small minded people are like that ..not that I'm tyring to infer anything, mind - I'm just sayin' is all.

You know, I was dead-on convinced that my 'dig' at you was actually a return volley, but I went and carefully re-read before your 'bombastic' entry (which, 'for the record' (you seem big on that) I see as less of a dig than halfway decent powers of observation, but I digress (doesn't earn you a free ride tho')) and gosh-darn it, you're right! I can only conclude that I wounded your id with "But NOT for the head-in-the-sand reasons that beta & hosstheboss are busy bleating about.." Only, what's a fella to do? To my 'narrow mined view point'(sic), you are holding what I deem to be a recklessly small-minded position, quite possibly out of ignorance (about trying to deny/bottle knowledge - specially in the context of the 'net), and felt compelled to air my view.

But without trying to act like the better person (and I really mean that, no sarcasm) you might want to take note of the one thing…
You're entirely welcome to not approve, I don't care about you either!
Heh, I invite you to take note of the tonal modifier present at the end of my line, commonly known as the smiley (actually, it's an emoticon) whose purpose you apparently don't grasp. You see, one way of reading that line appears to be hurtful; another is rather more flippant, but with a bit of a barb. I'm not wanting to lecture here, but I can't help but get the impression you didn't see that.

Oh, that second line is priceless! You definitely get style points here - and kudos for maintaining the same (wounded) tone so evenly and smoothly throughout. As to somehow being buddy-buddy and not disagreeing? Nein, big misstep there old son: you and I evidently have widely divergent views* on the value and dissemination of knowledge, to the point of it being more of a yawning chasm than a cozy bar stool's distance.

P.S. thanks for correcting my spelling (the red is a nice touch, really teacher like; I feel educated now) sorry if I don’t offer you the same courtesy.
Yea, the emboldened red really draws attention, dunnit? Glad you liked it, I aim to please. Oh, and knowing that I've contributed to someone's education - that's really special! As to not getting any courtesy from you, no worries mate; I wasn't really expecting any!

*So now, as entertaining as your little fluff-piece reply here is (again, thank you for the moment) it's little more than inter-personal candy-floss (but very well executed) I fail to see a response from you on: (what the hell, it's suddenly becoming all the rage to quote oneself, I might as well get in on the act!)

Your learned response on this (on-topic(-ish)) part of my post is notable by its glaring absence and sorely missed. IMO, seeing as this thread has morphed somewhat from the catalyst of WEP cracking, we can definitely discuss the broader topic of knowledge, its relative freedom and the possible moral implications of denying (or at least trying to) access to it.

Oh, and if you've never considered a career in politics, maybe you should: you really DO have the touch! ..I don't because, as you've seen, I fall a little short of the mark when it comes to subtlety.

Not to worry I saw your entire post as flippant (as is this last one of yours), to use your own words, it's why I consider you rude, but as I said I see this manner as a reflection on you.

And as far as having your friends read this thread, I'm surprised you have any (back to the point of being rude, I know I’m harping on this but it’s the only point I’m trying to make).

As far as your opinions go (on which point you feel I seem to be really slow for not responding to them), I have/had no desire to challenge as you are most likely correct in your view point, in fact I don’t ever recall challenging your view on the subject, I was merely defending myself from the head in sand label, yet you still feel a need to puff your chest out, o well

*O yes respecting some one else’s opinion is allowing them to have it, and possibly offer constructive criticism, but it's not needed you to take a swing at them for having it.

i have done this a while back, and this did not work, anyway people dont use that anymore, this is 2006 you know.(imagine sitting outside a house at 2 in the morning with your laptop scanning, and taking 36 hours to come right to the last hex key)what a waist of time

That was, indeed, a while back. Here is a news item about the FBI breaking a 128-bit WEP key in 3 minutes. A bit of googling can yield all the software you need to accomplish this.

And although newer, more secure technologies are available, old stuff will always get used, since most home users of wireless LANs are not up-to-date with the latest security features available to them.

In a very thorough drive through Cape Town a couple of months ago, it was interesting to note that around 95-98% of Access Points were using WEP, and the rest were using either no protection or WPA ....
Interestingly, the WPA users were in residential areas. Broadcasting of AP SSID's was the norm, mostly with default SSID set which is generally indicative of the security compitence of the company or user.

Definitely more difficult as the bar is higher in terms of what you have to know to get in on the game. This is not to say it's impossible, there are a plethora of "pen test" distros & live CDs out there but, it's one thing having a (highly configurable and very powerful) tool ..it's another thing entirely knowing how to use it!

Thanks I’ll sleep comfortably, tonight.

I have a wireless network running and anyone outside in the street is able to see the network, SSID disabled and using MAC security, but I'm not sure if this will deter a determined person.

In the unlikely event of a skilled person wanting to obtain access to a wireless network, with the above security measures in place - what time frame would be involved?

hiding your ssid won't work, it can be picked up by anything!

with my laptop and my usb stick i could sit there and either , 1 sniff packets for mac id's. 2. turn my stick into a spoof AP with the same ssid and see what mac's connect.

once i have a mac, its as simple as entering it onto my settings and then i'm on your network.

with the right equipment it takes minutes, and i have a nice cheap usb R200 stick that can do it all
