Saying "most victims of crime are not white" is disingenuous, and I hope wasn't intended to be purposely misleading: most *South Africans* are not white, so even if EVERYTHING was even between races that statement would still be true. One needs to look at per-capita proportions, not absolute numbers.
Anyway, I once saw a survey that was done of jailed black hijackers who had murdered their victims. They asked them if they were more likely to target whites specifically, 40% said yes. As I recall, some of these would specifically only target whites, while others were willing to target anyone but would have a 'preference' towards white victims. The rest (i.e. 60%) said they targeted whoever they could, black or white. So basically some percentage of victims of crime are white, and then a *further subset* of those white victims were targeted for being white (it's impossible to know which in almost all cases unless a killer happens to shout his motives to some witnesses) - probably amounting to around a couple thousand deaths per year I would guess, if one looks at the numbers. That's just being realistic - in fact looking at the brutal history of this country it would be preposterous to suggest that virtually no black criminals harbour any anti-white sentiment (and I know for a fact from numerous personal accounts that many black people do harbour anti-white sentiment ... I've been insulted etc. for being white many times now).
I think black people still tend to 'bear the brunt' of crime though, because they are less likely to be able to afford decent security, and mostly live closer to the criminals i.e. mostly in the townships, making them easier targets. And even though they have less to steal, it's also harder to cope with theft if you are poorer - e.g. if you're white (or nowadays, black middle class) chances are the insurance pays for your car and you buy a new one, if you're poor you likely don't even have insurance on that old car. If you're poorer you're also less likely to be able to afford to take the time/money to travel to the police station and go stand in queues to report a crime. A huge amount of crime (e.g. crimes in which nobody dies) goes unreported in this country, and it is pretty much a certainty that it will tend to be poorer i.e. black people who are less likely to report crimes than whites. This might skew the stats again disproportionately towards the view that whites are being targeted (which is independent of whether they are or not - i.e. doesn't mean they're not). Complex issue. (But if there is one thing that virtually surefire proves that it is happening is that the government wouldn't be going to such lengths to hide crime victim race ratios if it wasn't: if the stats showed it wasn't happening, they'd definitely be keen to reveal that, instead they are very keen to hide whatever it is the stats are showing.)
It's obvious that racial factors come into play heavily in South African crime - when last did you hear of a gang of armed white men breaking into a black person's house? It virtually *never happens* (I've never even heard of it happening, and it would certainly be big news if it did), yet vice versa happens probably dozens of times a day --- even if you factor out the differences in population and social demographics, this is amazing - it still doesn't add up at all - statistically it should theoretically happen at least a few times a month - I mean we now have sizeable black middle class, and poorer (and violent) whites do exist. In fact the low proportion of white perpetrators is almost somehow unnaturally bizarre (if you compare to other countries with sizeable white populations, white criminals are still quite common - and purely by *demographics alone* a victim of a white criminal in SA is more likely be black (unless white criminals also mainly target whites! -- that would be interesting indeed)) - and I find it hard to imagine that it's happening all the time and the media just isn't reporting on it - they seem to jump heavily on every "white on black" crime story that occurs, and even when there is no indication or evidence that racism was a factor such cases automatically get labelled as racism cases.
I am sure that if my old house keeper, who has been raped, is HIV positive and has had her shack robbed about 5 times had R40 000 in the bank and a passport, she would also be leaving the country.
Indeed, I know a middle-class black family who were the victims of an armed robbery in their home and one of the first things they said about it afterwards was something like "now we are also considering leaving the country" :/
