A majority of Western Cape MPLs voted in favour of the provincial community safety bill, the Cape Argus reported on Thursday.

Twenty-three of 36 members of the provincial legislature voted in favour of the bill on Wednesday, which would give the provincial government more control over the police.

Once enacted, it would give authorities the power to call for the removal, transfer, or disciplinary action against the provincial police commissioner. It would allow them to investigate complaints of police inefficiency and assess the effectiveness of visible policing, among other things.

Western Cape community safety MEC Dan Plato reportedly said it was the first time they had legislated on provincial oversight of the police.

"Oversight remains critical... effective oversight can act as a catalyst for improved policing," he said.

ANC MPL Khaya Magaxa said the bill would create "inter-governmental conflict" between the national and provincial departments.

Cope MPL Mbulelo Ncedana said he supported the bill "in part" and warned it should not be used to wage political battles.
