Western Digital buys SanDisk

Now if we just get some decent SSDs from the traditional hard drive manufacturers.

wut

Monopoly much????

I think it's more about survival in this case. Mechanical drives are heading towards obsolescence and WD is nowhere in the SSD market. It's about making sure they still have a viable business in 5 years time.

I see it differently to how I would if it was an established solid state storage brand buying another solid state storage brand.

It will be new hybrid drives with a large SSD cache. This is what they are aiming for, I think.

There's no way of knowing if the NSA's spyware is on your hard drive

There's no way of knowing if the NSA's spyware is on your hard drive Feb 18, 2015
http://www.computerworld.com/articl...f-the-nsas-spyware-is-on-your-hard-drive.html

Malware intentionally created by the U.S. National Security Agency to infect personal computer hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid-state drives (SSDs) cannot be detected by antivirus programs.

The spyware, which infects a drive's firmware, can also produce a treasure trove of data for any government agency controlling the drives

Kaspersky said the latest spyware was discovered on hard drives from more than a dozen major manufacturers, including Seagate, Maxtor (now a subsidiary of Seagate), Western Digital (WD), Toshiba, IBM and even SSD makers such as Micron and Samsung.

"There is no way to understand whether your HDD is infected,"

Kaspersky's report said the company found personal computers in 30 countries infected with one or more of the spying programs, with the most infections seen in Iran, followed by Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China .......

Hard drive maker WD said that prior to the release of Kaspersky's report, it had no knowledge of the NSA cyberespionage program. "We take such threats very seriously. The integrity of our products and the security of our customers' data are of paramount importance to us," a WD spokesman wrote in an email reply to Computerworld.
The WD spokesman said the company has not participated in or supported the development or deployment of cyberespionage technology by government entities, adding that "Western Digital has not provided its source code to government agencies." "We are in the process of reviewing the report from Kaspersky Labs and the technical data set forth within the report," the spokesman said.

..... and where's your (WD's) public feedback / report, on the initial report ?
Awfully quiet after the initial flurry of articles back in Feb. 2015.

I'd only ever use a hybrid drive in a laptop that can only take 1 drive.

Otherwise it's SSD for OS and program installations, and mechanical for mass storage.

It will change when SSD caching capacity increase to 128/256GB.
