Hey

I'm want to set up yet another wisp in my home town.

I would like to know from everyone out there, what are the chances of me getting nailed either by incasa or telkom? Has anyone been shutdown and on the other hand, how many are running happily and making money?

I feel its time that the public get a real chance at a enjoyable Internet connection, without having to sell the children, and i think it would be a real shame if the honest business men of this country would be suffocated by the competition.

Are there ways of getting around this issue of communicating over borders? What about saying that I'm networking within the borders of Durban, or kzn for that matter?

I hope there will be lots of response to this, so we can have a better idea of whether to try and make a living out of wisp or if we should just hand our souls over now and get it over with?

Can you explain a little more about how you are going to do this ?

Well i guess i will try provide a connection at below the norm cost, that way i make some money and my customers have a internet connection they enjoy, is that not the basic principal of a wisp?

I'm going to use senao 11meg stuff, simple but it works, and is 200mw, or is this not a good idea?

As far as high sites are concerned, i will try to make the best of high customers. if they on a good spot and don't mind a extra 2 antenna, bobs your uncle. another spot to get customers.

Am i just crazy thinking this will work?

Some friendly advice, search this forum for "Wisp" and have a look at all of the previous threads that have dealt with similiar ventures.

100mw is the legal limit, so 200mw is not a good idea, no!

Senao for CPE maybe, suggest you run better stuff.

as Ryder said anything about 200mw is illegal, as well as piss people off when you go over that and create more noise. There is an example that i can think of in Durban.

Some wise words that i once heard. "Rule number one of running a WISP. If you dont know have to run an ISP dont run a WISP"

Good advice, and noted on the 200mw issue. Hacking off the next guy trying to play with with wireless network is a sure fire way to get your equipment taken away i guess.

With reguards to the satement of only attemping an wisp if you know how to run an isp, it makes sense, but how will i ever learn and grow myself if i dont make a jump into the unknown. I guess the best way to learn how to fix something is by having 20 steaming customers breaking down your door!!!

Not so much fun for the customers...

YES.

I have great support of WISPs as they are the competition to Telkom. I know that they have to get bandwidth from telkom but at least Telkom lose out on the line rental.

But what i dont like is them not giving good service. Yes wireless is not the most stable of mediums but uptime pls. and give what you say.

Well there are so many WISP'S poping up, the only thing that i feel that will break me away from the rest is service, and quality supply. Hold thumbs for me!
