What are these things still used for?

You get those blue signs too on highways, if you report an accident on a highway you can provide SANRAL or whomever with a more precise location.

Maybe, saw them digging up and replacing a +- 900mm pipe there some time ago hence the kaka assumption

always wondered what those were for, somebody told me its gas lines,
apparently some tow truck guys have maps that explain where each is, and can find you quickly with those.
