What can be expected/asked for when installing Fibre-into-TH?

Hello all,

I've just signed up for Fibre, after several years of WISP. The latter saw a dish up on the roof, and WAN cable down to a POE, and into my Asus Router.

OpenServe is hopefully coming on Wednesday, to set-up the Fibre connection.
From what I gather, the Junction and ONT box is what will be "added" to the mix, by the Openserve installation.

Since I won't unfortunately be at home during the install, I'm trying to get a sense of what I need to tell the SO, in terms of what should happen in the install.
We have also just finished painting/touching up inside and outside – so trying to minimise any 'invasive' changes!

I have a couple of questions that I am hoping someone who has recently installed Fibre can help with:

1.) How should we expect the fibre cable to brought 'into' the house?
As in – do they drill entry-points through the wall etc? If not, what then? And how is the placement of the cabling actually handled?
The current Router sits in a fairly visible area in the middle of the house, at the bottom of the stairs.
As in, the main area of the house is "below" the road level, with only a main bedroom/study and bathroom being 'upstairs' at the road level.
So any cable brought in, is going to be fairly visible?
Do they take care of any cable trunking – or is all the cosmetic 'fixes' for our account?

2.) Must the Junction and ONT be affixed to a wall? Or can it be placed inside a cabinet etc.?

3.) Am I correct in presuming that we could have the Junction & ONT installed on the upper level, and then make a plan to run the WAN/Ethernet from the ONT downstairs to the Wifi Router?
So there aren't necessarily any benefits to having the Junction/ONT next to the Router?

Any other pointers I might have regarding the practicalities surrounding the practicalities would be appreciated!

They would usually do the easiest installation possible to cut time..

re all your questions, i suggest your SO speaks to the installer when they arrive and ask them, they normally would install the junction box outside, drill a hole through the wall and run the cables through the roof, alternately, run it along the edges of the wall

as for the ONT, they normally install it at the most convenient place, so ask them to have it installed where you want it.

just be careful though, they can usually do what you request, but if extra labor hours and materials(cable etc) is needed, they charge you separate

My inlaws had theirs run into the house in the same way a normal analogue line would be installed. Anchored outside the building and then run into the roof. After that it was just dropped down in the most convenient place to install the ONT.

Im waiting for an installation and I wasnt willing to let them think or make a mess, so I have installed a long conduit run with a draw wire through my ceiling. It terminates in the cupboard I want the equipment to live in so it will never be visible.

Many thanks all. Think we will rather spend up-front (i.e. Have them do as much of the install as possible), than have someone else come in after the fact to tidy up.

Roof option would have been ideal – but given where the router etc. needs to be, relative to the roof spacing/sections – won't be feasible, unfortunately. So looks like we would need to run along the wall etc., with trunking.

Question: We can presumably keep the ONT inside a cellar under the stairs etc., and then simply run the Ethernet cable (+/- 5 metres) into the back of the Router, correct? No need for it to be that close to the Router?

This option would be more feasible, since the ONT and Junction box could be placed more conveniently, relative to each other (junction upstairs near entrance; ONT downstairs, but almost directly below).

Yup, you can put the ONT and router anywhere you want, just cable with ethernet from there to the point you want the wifi to be.
Personally I want mine as out of the way as possible because I have Ubiquiti unifi access points in my house that deliver the end connections.
For the cameras etc I have ethernet cabled out to them which is nicely run through trunking in the wall. Its one of the benefits of having just built my house and having planned for all of this!

The drill a hole into your wall at a preferred position where u want the box (router) to be mounted, from where the cable will be linked up from outside the house. I put mine way down, close to the scurting next to my bookshelf in the corner, hidden by a curtain. But please take note not to mount it too low as u still need to plug ure cables in at the bottom like with the flat screen tvs. Mine was too low and i almost had to stand on my head to look where to plug the lan cables in, so I used my phone camera ffs lol.
