What can we do about the Xenophobia?

If the violence is the result of hopeless people without jobs, and without the education to find better jobs, what is our government doing about this? Sending in the army might suppress the symptoms of the problem, but it's doing nothing to solve it in the long term.

If our government won't act, isn't there something that we - by which I mean those South Africans fortunate enough to have Internet access - can do? Are there any organizations that focus on giving the poor the tools they need to lift themselves out of the situation where killing a competitor for a dead end job seems a good idea?

I've been searching online for charities focusing on education in SA. There are a few claiming to do this, but is there any way to tell which ones are actually doing useful work?

admirable idea, but - guess what - that should have been on your, and the State agenda, within a month of taking power in 1994.

Now its a little like closing the barn door after the horse has bolted.

About it not being on the state agenda, that's my point. If the government doesn't care maybe we should start doing things ourselves. Complaining about the government is all very well but the voice of a minority means nothing in a democracy. Maybe if the majority had better education, and weren't living hand to mouth, and had the luxury of thinking about voting for other parties, then the government would start feeling pressure to improve things?

IMO throwing money at the problem through charities etc. is not a solution to the problem. I don't have all the answers either.

Police need to be firm and hard on this issue and crush the violence by whatever means necessary, if that means using live ammo then so be it, but it needs to be swift and final.

In order to be educated, you must first WANT to be educated. Then when you do begin your education you should keep the attitude about education only and not use your oppurtunities to destroy everything around you because it is you right to be angry.

It has become to easy in this country to just hold out your hand and if nobody put something in u'r hand go and take it yourself.
